Looks like VP pedals. They use standard SPD cleats. So if they are still in a working condition then they will be just fine.

Excuse my ignorance but do I have to buy specific shoes for these pedals or is there another attachment thingy?

(I will probably laugh about this post in a few months time)

You will need MTB specific shoes.

And shimano spd cleats to screw onto the bottom of the shoes (they don't come with cleats)

Thanks Ian.

So before I invest in shoes, will these do or or should I look around first? I here stories of some riders not being able to release in a fall etc.

Looking to spend about R800. (pedals, not shoes)

Keep the pedals and get some nice shoes. They look fine just a bit scratched which new ones will be in no time. Dont ride with these pedals in tekkies. Your foot will slip off in no time and you will see your arse.

Get mtb shoes and cleats and ask someone to help you attach the cleats. Go to a field with soft grass and spend a half hour or so getting the hang of clipping and unclipping so by the time you hit a trail or group ride you are sorted.

Stories about unclipping in time are nonsense. It might happen but very rarely. Just get cofortable and set them up properly and you will never have a problem.

They are wellgo pedals. Probably the cheapest you can buy, I bought a pair when I started using clipless pedals and I'm still riding them. I HATE them though. Worst pedals ever! The bearings are stuffed so they click constantly and even when they were new they weren't very smooth. Sometimes they also decide to not release the cleats. The tension is all over the place and I have to constantly adjust them. Horrible (worse than shimano) in mud! Bottom line : I'm waiting for someone to do a CRC order so I can get some crank bros.

That said, If you are just starting out with clipless pedals, use them until you feel comfortable with the idea and then upgrade and throw these against a wall!
