Table Mountain Road

Recommended Posts

I have been living in the Cape Town City Bowl for one month now. Since I work at UCT medical school I am exploring the possibilities to cycle to work. I just bought a MTB and find out that there is a route over Table Mountain Road. I would like to cycle that route in the morning and evening, just after and before dark. My question is whether this would be wise to do with regard to my safety?

Additionally, would there be anyone interested to join me in the morning and/or late afternoon on (a part of) this route? [so, from Kloof-Nek Road to the UCT campus at Anzio Road]

Yep, to go alone might not be a good idea or do you think it won't be a problem? Are you interested to join me?

  • 2 months later...

There are usually quite a few MTB'ers on Table Mountain in the afternoon, between about 16:00 and 18:00. I would think it is pretty safe, but that is a dangerous assumption.

Hi Jeroen,

I used to ride this route in training quite a bit, and haven't had any bad experiences (like has been said, there are often bikers around, but not always, as it's quite a big area and it's easy to end up alone). I have to admit that the sporadic reports of people being robbed around the blockhouse and just above Rhodes Mem recently (the last year or so) has me concerned a bit. Probably more annoyed than concerned I guess, but still... The modus operandi is apparently to jump out from behind a bush and run away into the trees, presumably to a safe hiding spot. There are rangers patrolling the mountain regularly, but it's obviously a lot of ground to cover.

If you're commuting, I'd be careful specifically because you'll have a bag with you, making you a visible target.

Don't want to scare you off though, just thought I'd give you my perspective!

I've also ridden the jeep tracks on Table Mountain extensively. Its a great ride for people living close by. Afternoons and weekends there are usually many people riding up to the blockhouse as well as hikers. I think that robbers mostly target tourists, namely cellphones, money and jewelery. I don't think some of them would be capable to cycle on some of those roads without crashing the bike.

Apparently there are certain hotspots where a lot of muggings have taken place but thats also more on the trails that go right to the top of the mountain.
