Frame re-spray

The answer is yes and to prove it, I'm now going out to the garage and dunking a piece of carbon fibre rod (a fishing pole, actually) into a bottle of paint stripper. If you remind me tomorrow I'll take it out and take some photos with my macro camera.

I would love to see the outcome of this experimentWink

i have no clue what the outcome will be, but my guess is the paint stripper might attack the resin holding the carbon fibre togther.

I've done this , the outcome is just fine!!

No problems at all! The resin is in no way affected by the stripper.

Be however be carefull when you remove the blisterred paint, don't scrape or damage the carbon!!

Unlike clear carbon frames, painted carbon frames don't have a cosmetic layer of carbon to protect the structural cabon layers beneath, so in effect, any carbon damage will be structural damage!!

Good Luck!!  It will look Great!

I don't want to see some oke's rod!!!Dead

Dear MJ, I believe you are very keen to see a pictrue of my rod. Here it is.

The side to the left of the white mark (added afterwards for obvious reasons) was the side just above the paint remover level. The side to the right enjoyed a nice 14-hour soaking in half a litre of Tegso's best - 2007 vintage.

Here's a photo of the rod soaking in the half-bottle paint remover.

I cannot see or feel any ill effect on the carbon fibre rod at all.

But we've been through this before and my rod is quite famous.  It has been round the block a few times. Some of you may be old enough to remember this experiment:

Conclusion: Strip that paint with the strongest stuff you can find. No chemical found in your house or garage will damage it.

JB is quite correct (nice experiment Johan).  Paint stripper will do FA to properly cured epoxy resin (which is commonly used in carbon fibre composites).

Similarly acetone will not damage the resin.  What will damage the resin is dichloromethane (methylene dichloride) (or similar chlorinated solvents).

And, JB, I actually have some in my garage....Big%20smile

That's just not cool.

Tom Waits wrote a song for okes like you.

What's he building in there?  by Tom Waits.  (look for the bold text)

What's he building in there?
What the hell is he building
In there?
He has subscriptions to those
Magazines... He never
Waves when he goes by
He's hiding something from
The rest of us... He's all
To himself... I think I know
Why... He took down the
Tire swing from the Peppertree
He has no children of his
Own you see... He has no dog
And he has no friends and
His lawn is dying... and
What about all those packages
He sends. What's he building in there?
With that hook light
On the stairs. What's he building
In there... I'll tell you one thing
He's not building a playhouse for
The children what's he building
In there?

Now what's that sound from under the door?
He's pounding nails into a
Hardwood floor... and I
Swear to god I heard someone
Moaning low... and I keep
Seeing the blue light of a
T.V. show...
He has a router
And a table saw... and you
Won't believe what Mr. Sticha saw
There's poison underneath the sink
Of course... But there's also
Enough formaldehyde to choke
A horse...
What's he building
In there. What the hell is he
Building in there? I heard he
Has an ex-wife in some place
Called Mayors Income, Tennessee
And he used to have a
consulting business in Indonesia...
but what is he building in there?
What the hell is building in there?

He has no friends
But he gets a lot of mail
I'll bet he spent a little
Time in jail...
I heard he was up on the
Roof last night
Signaling with a flashlight
And what's that tune he's
Always whistling...
What's he building in there?
What's he building in there?

We have a right to know...

You have way too much time on your hands right now, it seems...

I have two dogs....and the lawn is not dying, the little f*&^^rs have torn out most of the grass....Big%20smile

I WAS up on the roof, but only to try and fix a leak....they say you should repair your roof when it is NOT raining...but would I listen?  Ouch

Anyhow, the DCM is a leftover from when I was still building stuff with epoxy resins, best solvent to clean brushes and aluminium rollers.  I actually should bring the stuff to work and dispose of it safely.  I can no longer work with epoxy resins as I have become violently allergic to the amine-containing harderners.  So if anybody wants two 20-kilo drums of epoxy resin and hardener.....free to a good home.
