_BBi Posted July 24, 2007 Share Time to retire my old MTB. Narrowed down my choice of new bike to one of these 2. Mostly love doing enduro type events +- 60km on weekends, and also multi stage events like the Sabie Experience. Take the races not to seriously. Anybody got some ideas which one? fandacious Posted July 24, 2007 Share If you dont take racing seriously, why fork out 20k? I dont take mtb seriously either (its a way of keeping fit in winter) and I spent 4k on my MTB. I still do very well in all the MTB races I do, but theres no way i'm gonna throw 20k at a MTB. NotSoBigBen Posted July 24, 2007 Share Tough choice between the 2 Specialized's but I wouldn't get a Raleigh! Personally I would take the Epic (Yes I do ride one now!). Very very nice.
Thug Posted July 24, 2007 Share Why don't you have a look at the Santa Cruz Superlight. Mikes Bikes in Greenside currently has one for around R 26 k, but can be tailored to meet your specific requirements.

It is closer to art that a bike sometimes for me. Seriously, I do not mind spending that much as I would ride it for the next 5-7 years like I rode my Trek 4500. But you make a good point in any case.
fandacious Posted July 24, 2007 Share aaah... so its about the bling factor.. well why didnt u say so? Well in that case, get the shiniest most-porno looking one

I read a lot on the suspension of the MTB's (because my current bike does not have a back shock (or for that matter a front shock - can only press it in 2 cm on the RST). Does the "brain" technology on the Specialized be felt or is that more a "gimmick"?
NotSoBigBen Posted July 24, 2007 Share IMHO - Stumpjumper = more bling, better for a variety of riding, Epic = more a XC/Marathon bike (i.e. great for Sabie experience type riding!) BUT that is only in my personal opinion! I wouldn't get a Raleigh or one those Raleigh wannabees (i.e. Santa's cruiser etc.)
NotSoBigBen Posted July 24, 2007 Share Yip I can feel (and hear) the brain working! Is it the best of both worlds as it has been stated? I am not sure but as an overall XC/Marathon bike it performs very well.
_BBi Posted July 24, 2007 Share I have made up my mind to get one of these Specialized bikes, so do not warry BigBen.
dirtrider Posted July 24, 2007 Share Just get a decent single pivot design . Get a Raleigh .
NotSoBigBen Posted July 24, 2007 Share DR - I whipped your arse on both that old Raleigh as well as that new army bike of yours! It may not have been about the bike though! Ok ok so you were next to the road assisting damsels in distress, that's a good excuse! _BBi_ - Good decision!
Thug Posted July 24, 2007 Share Just remember that although they might be 2007 bikes, both of those Specialized's are "OLD" models and will be replaced by totally new bikes in Sept / Oct for the 2008 season. BigBen is just jealous about the "Blingness" of the Santa Cruz
