Can you use a sram powerlink on a shimano chain. I read somewhere that shimano use a special pin/rivet?

Anything else I should know about using powerlinks??

chuck the shimano pin and use the powerlink. And always keep a spare on you when riding to use in the unfortunate event of your chain breaking

9spd works well.

The 10spd ones are not reusable (I think)

Opinion is split on this one (pardon the pun...).  You can reuse a 10-speed SRAM link.

I reuse my 10-speed link quite often as I take my chain off to clean it.  The only difference is you need a pair of pliers to get them on and off while you can use your hands with a 9-speed link.

Apparently they are IF you use pliers and force. So roadside repairs are out. Get the YBN links from Kiwi. They are cheaper then Sram and fully re-usable just like the 9spd.

kmc also makes some pretty useful chain links, similar to the sram powerlink.

Compatible with any chain which has the same thickness/speed.
