Scratch Posted June 5, 2010 Share I Know that there are no seal kits available to the public for Shimano brake systems, but any idea on what lubrication (grease or otherwise) would be safe to use on the brake pistons? It is quite common for one of the pistons to be 'tighter' than the other causing the two pads to move differently. If you take the brakes to the Shimano agents for servicing, they seem to use some lubricant (seems like a wax based product?) on the pistons which results in the pistons moving freely again without damagng the seals - any ideas? Mecnic Posted June 6, 2010 Share I just take the pads out of the caliper, pull the lever to extend the pads out and rop a little bit of shimano mineral oil on the piston and then pushe them back in and clean upo any excess spillage. I'm not shure what lubricant shimano use if you have them sent in
Turbobok Posted June 6, 2010 Share I've heard that the red grease one gets for rubber parts can be used in brakes, but I would use that as a last resort. Like Mecnic suggests, best method is to use brake fluid to lubricate. Then no chance of contamination, or clogging the machined fluid passages in the caliper.
