Knee issues

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I have a small issue with my right knee, so bad so that I have not rode for two to three months now... Now it is really not bad, but I just spent an hour on the trainer now, and towards the end (+- 45min) my knee started to grind a little.

Now, the question is:

1. DO I ride it out on the trainer at high cadence & low load?

2. Get a knee Brace?

3. Get some kind of gel?

If I could, I would like to stay well clear of a doctor for now, as the grinding is not that bad (yet).

Start by getting your bike set up properly and then get to a physio.....if that fails have to see a doctor.

Well, thank you for the obvious, maybe some bad on my behalf as well... My bike setup is good, have been riding bike since forever, so I pretty much know what I want. As I said, it is the right knee, and we fooled around kicking some balls a while ago, and since then my knee is not lekker. I have even thought that it might be the cold weather as well...

I Agree with BeOne, don't underestimate a good sports physio.

I did some damage to my right knee last saturday at a multisport event.

It was almost double the size of my left knee, and I could barely walk.

Been for physio twice and I cant believe the diffrence. (hoping to start light riding sessions next week)

I am not so keen on Doctors as a first option, they always seem to want to start cutting...

Dude i have had problems with my knees since forever, many many years skateboarding, wakeboarding and just doing stupid things like jumping of things etc. I did a few "burpies" and that was it, it was sore inside and it didnt want to stop, gels didnt work, stopping training didnt work.It was so sore that i couldnt sit in a car or aeroplane for longer than 2 hours. So i went to a knee doc and he chacked it out, now i am now specialist so whatever i am about to tell you dont hold me to it but it work for me.

My knee was sore to the touch above the knee cap right in the middle, runners knee i believe it is called in laymans terms. the doc told me STRETCH, a nice deep glute stretch. see the ligament is a bit tight, causing friction and pain. i stretched for 1 week 3 times a day and hey presto it is better, not cured but ALOT better. try it for a while, if it doesnt work, Doctor.

Stretch more. (ITband) Try do exercises to strengthen your vastus medialis. (Inner thigh muscle by knee)Leg extensions (one at a time)on machine at gym. With your toe pointing out do short leg extensions but only bend your knee 10-15 degrees. 4 or 5 sets of ten each leg. This may be the worst advice ever but it really has helped my knee issues. -disclaimer- You may have a different problem so I suggest you see a physio.

go see your GP to refer you to an orthopod that specializes in lower limbs/knees. cycling is already the best physio for knees. as it,stated above, strengthens the thigh muscles that gives stability to your knee. if the doc wants to cut it open immediately. think again.that said, you have tried the conservative route for some time now.

Thanks guys, I must say that I do not stretch enough, so that I will definitely look at for the next few weeks, otherwise, it is off to the doc...

Agree with the stretching bit, but proper stretching with correct body alignment etc. But at the same time u need to check it out go to a sports physician someone like Philda De Jager at Pretoria HPC comes to mind. She is not knife happy like the normal Dr's and would be able to make a diagnosis that would be helped with Bio's and Physio's supporting her diagnosis.

You might have imflamation of the tendons of your Patella (that knobby bone on your knee)

You need to see a GP, don't train for at least a week or two (yes no training not even spinning or running) and wear some elastic support like a knee guard.

{Deep booming voice}

RooiWillie...go to the GP...trust me.

Get it seen to by either a biokenetist or sports surgeon. It is not natural for a knee to do that.

Invest in a bikefit and play around with your cleat position on your shoe.

I am also a runner and do not experience any knee problems running (10km, 21km, 30km, 42km and 56km) but I had a knee discomfort doing mountain biking.

I adjusted my cleats in order for my toes to turn inwards. Solved my problem. ;)

Sounds as if you may have developed the same condition as me called Crepatis. I have had the same thing for 6 months now and as long as you have no pain associated with the grinding/clicking you should be OK.
