Servicing our Steeds

So we build up or purchase our dream bikes and then hit the road in earnest - when it comes to routine maintenance or mechanical problems / failures ....

Do you?

1. Work on it yourself - dont trust anyone else to do as good a job as you do

2. Have 1 favourite lbs or bike mechanic that does everything for you (ie wheels to gears)

3. Have a list of specialist that you send specific items too ie wheels to A, general service to B etc..

If you select (2) or (3) lets give a good punt to who you have found give a great service at a great price etc....

I use Cycle Fusion in Weltevreden Park for everything service related.

They always go the extra mile without breaking the bank.

Work on it myself! Spent some money, bought some tools and fix it myself.

Is that because you live so damn far from a real lbs :P

Sort of but I have also been burnt by a couple of lbs's and one gets tired of throwing money away.

Pretty much wrench on my steed myself much of the time if I have the time. Otherwise I use ol Juan 'Gghwun' Smook of Mobile Bike Tec and have never been disappointed

All of the above.

I will work on some of my steeds but sometimes you need special tools that will only be used once (Headsets, facing tools). I have learnt a lot and this has helped me with the ability to purchase parts better and offer advice to other riders.

I use Williams in Somerset west. Its far from the CBD but when you get your bike back he will tell you stuff about your steed you didnt know yourself. I was riding a frame for a loong time and he was the only one that picked up the crack. I wanted to buy some rotors and when he looked at my current rotors told me it was a waste as they were in good nick still (gotta love shimano) Not just a quick sale but great advice too. Only negative about going to Williams is that other people are there so you cant have him all to yourself to chat. He is passionate about Bicycles and people. My next favorite is BMC for great prices and quick fixes. I just dont like their location.

Prefer to do my own work BUT due to lack of a decent workspace I end up taking the bike in to the LBS for stuff that cant be done in a short space of time without a workstand / bench / place to leave parts dismantled and "still in progress".

I am fussy and lately (for the mtb anyway) I can vouch for this place for good personal service, so if you ever in the area look him up :D

They actualy produce a "special" mtb called the Transalpes.

I do everything myself, If I dont know how I find the hell out. Interesting that one of the brand names actually states that the warranty is void if you buy the frame and assemble the bike yourself and not a bike shop

I try do most stuff myself, but I dont know everything and I dont always have time (or space) and my 3 year old always wants to help (hit things with a hammer), so BMC (in Woodstock) gets to work on my bike. I rate them highly and reccommend them to anyone who will listen.

I prefer to do it myself, the lbs always mess things up. I don't have all the tools yet, so I have to take it in from time to time.

Used Juan Smook the mobile mechanic for the first time last week. He did four bikes at my house (mates 'arrived' with their bikes when they found out about it). I can't compliment the service or outcome enough. If you don't have the talent to fix or the time to schlep your bike to the LBS and back, try him out.
