building a 29er

Recommended Posts

I want to build up a 29er hardtail and I was looking online at forks and wheel sets,

Has anyone any comments on the "Marzocchi 44 TST2 Air fork" and the "WTB laser disc trail 29" wheels" both are in my price range but i don't know whether they are good or not.

Also does "Joes or Stans " do a 29" tubeless conversion kit.

Any recommendations for frames gladly accepted, not carbon as I am 85kg

For frames, give the niner emd(eat my dust) frame.

I am 93 kg and I also have a Specialised Carbon stumpjumper 29" hardtail. No problem.

You can buy it if you want it.Highly specced.R54000.00.I need a large ,not a meduim.I also have a set virtually new stroker hayes discs brakes in very good condition for R650.00 and a light Bontrager handle bar.

Avoid the Marzocchi fork since there is no agent in this country and it is big tears when something goes wrong.

As for the wheels, it is very important to first establish if you can get spare rims for those wheels. TwoWheels trading in PE are the agents for WTB. Just ask them if they bring in that particular rim.

If you damage a rim on an imported wheel, you're stuck. Unless the rim is available as a spare part, you're in for a complete replacement of spokes.

I've seen a fair number of bent 29er wheels recently and I wonder if this is just an aberation and statistical oddity or, whether these wheels are more prone to damage. A 29er wheel with the same number of spokes as a 26er, is significantly weaker than its smaller counterpart and I think this weakness is enough for you to worry about spare part availability.

I have built up a 29er hardtail about two months ago. I have done about 1700km on this bike so far, and my second chain is alreday halfway through its life.

So far I find my bike to be very solid with very good overall performance.

Fork: For the fork I have used a Rock Shox Reba SL, which is very good value for money, especially since I got it second hand for R2000. As mentioned by JB you will find it hard to obtain parts for the Zocchi and the one you have mentioned is not the Ti model which means it is quite heavy, over 2kg if I remember correctly.

Wheels: I decided to go custom with wheels, and went for Shimano SLX hubs M629 with the freehub which is torque rated for 36T cassettes(don't know if it is just marketing, but it gives me some peace of mind). For rims I used Mavic TN719 with DT Competition Spokes 2.0/1.8/2.0. I also used brass nipples which means that the wheels can be trued easily in years to come.

I have done a lot of research before I built up my 29er so please feel free to pm me should you have any other questions.

howzit!

29ers are king.

i am 100 kilo's and have the most incredible experience on these things.

chalk and cheese and if you can roll big gears....the best decision you will make.

simple really to build....tubeless and bang stans in, avid ultimate group...lots on here to buy second hand and depends on wheels hub size, but if you have a c dale its a 20mm through axle, as hard as nails. american classic wheels are good for light weights guys at 85 but not for bigger fella's.

mavic x max wheels are cool and power stuff.

fixik sadle and get a good crank....thats the trick. cyclelab at northgate have actually got a top top fsa crank for sale for 2900, normally 12k for the full carbon. there is a good deal.

rear tyres tend to wear quickly, but hey...when its so much fun to ride who gives a hoot about the 1 tyre you have to replace every 3 months.

i ride 300 to 400 a week and they bullet proof.

have fun...they great.

ciao.
