Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club had a nice morning ride on Saturday.

This was Maritz's very first outing on his new Titan.  We took the cones and did a bit of practice/training riding early morning.  With the setup sorted he had a blast on the new pump track.

Time to catch our breath and register for the ride ....

What a brilliant vibe !!

Thanks to the clubs new co-sponsors ....

At the last second Maritz said he wanted to do the 15km ride, and so we lined up for the 8:15 start.  We typically start at the back of the pack.  We passed a few riders and found our sweet spot mid-pack.

B-Spot was BUSY !  Nice pace, and a brilliant vibe out on the trails.

Couple of riders struggled with the wooden bridge at the end of B-Spot.  This stretched out the field nicely.  By the time we were at the D'Aria dam the we had lots of space behind and ahead of us.

After Protea corridor the route turned UP !!  We were told of the long climb at the riders briefing.... Garmin says sections of this was grade 13 ....  Most of the kids (of all ages) walked sections of this long climb ... The climbing finally stopped when we got to Lombards Terra.

Getting ahead of myself though.  At the bottom of Protea Maritz took a few BIG gulps of water .. and got the mother of "milt-steek" ...  That was one long painful climb for him.  Super proud that he hung in there.

At Lombards we put down our bikes, walked a section, checking out the trail and the options.  Seeing other riders taking the main and chicken lines was good.  We stopped twice on the way down, walking and checking the next sections .... In the end Maritz rode all but one section of Lombards.

By now he had recovered from the milt-steek and he was back in his stride for Bloemen-Nice and Home-Run.

All the walking meant we came in late ... by now there were no boerewors rolls ....  o-well, no option but to go home and make our own boeries ...

THANKS to the club for a lovely group ride    There is just something different about this ride, in a good way.  Even with fun rides there are always the odd racer at the back of the pack shouting, pushing and shoving to move up one spot.

That's the way to start December's rides ... the absolute coolest thing about today's ride from Alberhoughton to Vaal Marina was passing a 'ZALAWI' horse and trailer going very slowly up that last tough climb before you turn right into Vaal Marina ON THE OUTSIDE (before anyone gets on a high horse there was really no space on the verge!) and the driver leaned out the window and gave me a high five [emoji41]176220b7d725c71b5a0f22fd110e5208.jpg0cb935d2599306e34536986d005202e0.jpg96737ffa00d57658e257f082be309f4b.jpg

Did a little solo gravel grinding this weekend down Heidelberg way from home. Hooked up with a new group of dirt riders, great bunch of guys. Got passed by a coal train which seemed to go on forever.

Still digging The Grinch. Found the 2.8 tyres to roll really well on the slightly rougher gravel roads. Can feel the weight and resistance a bit when riding road however. If anything it'll just force me to ride more dirt this coming holiday.

The sun showed it’s face today,so took the RLT to do some roadie km’s in the hills of our local village. Been itching to try out my road wheels with 32 panaracers ,way better than the sawtooth’s for road duty.

Our village Christmas tree ????????

I was forced to be a 4am rider many years back due to training for some stage races, working a hard job and being a full time father and husband. I hated it, struggled to get out of bed and did it out of pure necessity. One day, in the dead quiet of the darkness, just me, my thoughts and the sound of the tyres on the road everything changed. It’s now my favorite time to ride. I don’t need to ride early anymore but it’s become my happy place.

Ditto, I'm in the exact same position. It was really tough in the beginning as I started riding in July last year. I tricked myself by putting my phone in another room under my "cycling kit" (which at that stage was a training short, Tshirt and old hoodie). When I stood there, lights already on, warm clothes already within arms reach, already out of bed, it made it a lot easier.

Now though I've gotten so used to it that I dislike starting my rides later than 05:00 even on weekends. Roads are much quieter, I feel generally safer, temps are lower, and you get to see the sun rise. I can do a 100km ride on the weekend and be back in time to have breakfast with my girls at home.
