LazyTrailRider Posted January 12, 2011 Share I think its time I move into SharePoint development - seems all the prospective jobs matching my skillset are all requiring SharePoint experience. SharePoint has certainly been attracting the attention of a whole bunch of dev firms in the last two years or so, we used to be one of the only SP specialists in Cape Town a few years ago. Now everyone claims to be a SharePoint guru... It's an amazing platform to work with though, if you understand and appreciate that it's exactly that: a platform, with specific benefits, specific limitations, and specific frustrations; which if you can understand their necessity in the bigger scheme of things can make it the most incredibly powerful way to build and integrate certain types of business apps at the moment. Back to practicalities though, the front-end web developer position doesn't require SharePoint as an absolute necessity. It's web 2.0 type skills we're needing, SharePoint just happens to be the platform on which we build stuff. If you can develop slick web forms and interfaces and have really good Javascript, XML/XSLT, XHTML and web services skills, you're ready for it! If I reply with a "I don't do pretty" then I guess that puts me out of the prospective queue of candidates. Personally moving towards backend or intranet frontends as I no longer have the patience to make pretty HTML pages
