wesley_r Posted January 19, 2011 Share Considering tossing the 100mm Rock Shox Tora on my Mongoose hardtail for something a little better - 120mm of travel, air or spring doesn't matter as long as it's a better ride than the Tora, and I don't want to break the bank... Any suggestions as to how much I should expect to spend, and what to look at?
MTBiker Posted January 19, 2011 Share You can buy a rockshox recon or manitou at crc for around 1700-2000. I don't know how large the difference will be from you 100mm.I would rather save for a decent frame and then build it up well from there. If you buy a decent 120mm fork and then buy a 150mm frame, you will need a new shock. Keep watching classifieds and there's a secong hand shop in cape town called avron cycles, if you are looking for a new frame now.
wesley_r Posted January 21, 2011 Share what about a 2nd hand '07 Fox Talas (air, with adjustable travel - 90/110/130)? Edited January 21, 2011 by the_wes
The Drongo Posted January 21, 2011 Share what about a 2nd hand '08 Fox Talas (air, with adjustable travel - 90/110/130)? Wes Go for Air sprung . The extra weight of coil on that frame will make it uncomfortable. The frame design is almost Dirtjump, going for an adjustable travel will give you BIG fun.See if you can pick up a 20mm through axle fork (although it will mean a front hub upgrade)Are you running disk brakes? Tyax came OEM with caliper.

Tyax came OEM with caliper. through-axle would be ideal. i want to eventually upgrade the hubs anyway... but the cheapest through-axle fork i have found is the Rock Shox Sektor for like R3500 at CRC. Adjustable travel from 115-150mm. on the one hand, it's overkill and i'll never use more than 120 / 125mm, also it's more than half what my bike cost. on the other hand, it has a better chance of being transferred to whatever my next bike ends up being (like an on-one summer season) PS. my tyax came with disc brakes

Beaut fork, easy to service. You can get thru axle in that model. Fully transferable to your new full sus frame.

Plus 120mm max - when I go full sus I'll be going 140-150 mm Edited January 21, 2011 by the_wes
