  1. The Sungardens Carousel race again led to situations where it was difficult to break away from the pelaton as each time the stragglers found their way back behind a tandem or AL riders as happened in the VC race today. This leads to huge frustration particularly for those that have done all the work to get away from the group only to be hauled in. Would it not be possible for event organisers to start groups such as tandems and AL earlier to allow for a fairer reflection of results, this also affects the ladies racing at some events. Any comments?
  2. Canaris please explain how 'we,' fix what is wrong in this country. Unless there is a spirtual and morale revival in this country don't expect the change we all desire. It seems every time we are moving forward with transformation and accepting affirmative action while not necessarily agreeing with it we have outbursts from a bunch of bafoons interested only in using the uneducated masses for their obvious political ambitions. Read previous comments from other hubbers and you will understand there is not much more we can sacrifice to continue on in the present climate accept pray for a change of heart, which can only come about if we accept God as our ultimate beginning and end of reconciliation and change. Perhaps you see it differently? So sad this state of affairs
  3. Urbanroyal I disagree with you on the issue of our youth been held accountable. This attitude will just contnue to perpetuate a cycle of hate and anger and no nation can be built on that basis. Every young South African must have and continue to have equal opportunity in all areas of our society. Let us also not fool ourselves, there is no utopia anywhere in the world - there are however places where we can enjoy equal opportunity and our children can be chosen for teams based on talent not colour, play in playgrounds based on mutual respect and frienship not colour and work together based on ability and not affirmative action. Agree or not if you do not put the wrongs of the past behind and utilise current resources to uplift our society in general - we won't be Zim in 20 years we'll be there in 5. I'm going for a ride now. Good luck on further debate in regard to this topic.
  4. Lets sum this up: (1) Another horrific murder has taken place and probably a few more since this thread started. (2) Freedom of speech (sic) seems to be now the sole domain of a few criminals and applauded by the powers that be (sic) (3) Crime is crime is crime no matter where it takes place i.e in prison, in the townships, suburbs, malls etc (4) Condeming crime by the powers that be will not stop the obvious morale decay and lawlessness in our country, ONLY their immediate actions towards bringing about sound law enforcement and upliftment of all our citizens will bring about positive change. (I know this is the stuff fairy tales are made of- yet I can live in hope or as one of the hubbers has commented pack up and head of to ................) The next few days and weeks will show us what we are all in for - watch the news). Just an example of the morale sickness of this country is the building of billions of rands worth of soccer stadiums ( which will mostly be empty and unsustainable after the world cup while we have the majority of our population receiving inferior education, pitiful shacks to live in, mothers with children/babies at robots begging, men and woman unemployed or even worse unemployable. South africa is sitting on a time-bomb and it is only a matter of time before it explodes - God help us!
  5. Velo you can't be serious pal? It is this type of attitude that will prevent this country moving forward and until you can see us as one nation instead of those who did terrible things and those who didn't. Believe me there were terrible things committed on both sides - no one is innocent. God help us if we do not move on................. One thing that I do agree with you on though is that there is little or no justice in this world, something that seems to be a condition of the human heart, however, it only takes one person to stand up and say the right things - it will give people hope and where there is hope there is a way - a way to building a country we can all call our own and be proud of it.
  6. Velo your tone is obviously not one of nation building and while you have that attitude which in many ways is no different to ET or Malema we will not experience the reconciliation and joy of been one nation. There are not many countries anywhere in the world that can boast of a 'faultless history,' however, just maybe our youth can work on all the good that did come out of the early nineties. It seems we can't!
  7. This is a 10 plus page thread because I believe that all South africans genuinely interested in nation building are sick and tired of crime in general that affects all of us on a daily basis. ET is another murder statistic as are the many others that are killed in the townships and in our suburbs on a daily basis. People are 'gatvol,' of the governments failure to bring our nation together. Blaming apartheid constantly for their inability after 16 years in the 'hotseat,' no longer carries any weight for the majority of the population. They have not delivered as promised and are looking for scapegoats. People wanting to build a nation don't sing or rejoice in wanting to kill each other!!!!!!!!
  8. Velo the youth of our country do not have to relive the wrongs of the past. By the way astrocities were committed on both sides rightly or wrongly. Secondly, if this is the attitude of the new government towards any minority group then this country is really f*&&^%d, and there is no future for our youth. The whites and blacks need each other if this country is to add value to its citizens and to the African continent. However, if you are serious about what you say then we can only anticipate further misery and hopeless for the masses who want peace and security where we can all raise our children as one nation.
  9. Weight weenie where have u been hiding the last 16 years. Do you honestly believe that the death of ET will 'allow the country to move on!' It is like saying he is the cause of all the ills characterising our country at this time. Wake up boet! While you have a government who cannot govern themselves, never mind the country, crime will continue to escalate at every level of our society. The biggest problem in this country right now is our naivety in thinking it 'will get better,' while we are ruled by a bunch of gafoons seeking self-gratification while the majority of the citizens are used as pawns in their game.
  10. Do we really believe that cycling protests and petitions will change the criminal mindset of the current 'law enforcers,' who do not share the same mindset as those who are currently the victims of general anarchy throughout our country. We will have to get used to the law of the jungle in South Africa, you only have to look around the rest of the continent to see where we are headed. The scale at which the general rule of the law has detriorated has detriorated at the same rate that crime at corporate and governmental level has increased. The fact that I cannot leave my home to go to work, go for a cycle or go to the movies without fear of losing my life or having a loved one harmed is indicative of a lawless society that is fuelled by the majority of this country of 50 + million citizens who continue to vote in a bunch of incompetent bafoons
  11. What happened to the television coverage of the Argus. Apart from the editorials during the morning, the coverage of the race itself was politely put - absolute rubbish. This was a poor performance considering that it was one of the most exciting Argus races ever If the wind was a factor then why was the elite ladies race and mens 40+ covered so extensively compared to the rest of the event?
  12. What a useless dumb thread. We should all be excited by what was probably one of the most exciting Argus races in a long time. Like him or not, Lance Armstrong is the International Ambassodor for road cycling and wips top mtb riders as well every now and again. He was not here to compare himself to anybody. Sounds like sour grapes to me! By the way I haven't come across any road cyclist in a race that doesn't 'suck,' wheel every now and again, we're all 'suckers.' The way I saw it was Lance dancing on his pedals at the back enjoying the wonderful Cape scenery
  13. I agree with Gobbo. How does letting a youngster having a photo with their hero affect the charity event? This is not a money issue, it is arrogance. It was a wonderful opportunity to show the 'human side,' of Lance. Regrettably while not knowing all the circumstances around this it would seem Lance has 'missed a gear.'
  14. Ianrodger perhaps a list of what to do's from here that we could coordinate from each province to somehow pull together. Supercycling should do more than just mention armbands. They have a great platform from which to launch constructive initiatives that will bring both motorists and other road users to order and motivate corrective governmental action. Just throwing our arms up in the air and cursing the problem, won't make it go away. far to many lives are lost on our roads every year because of road arrogance and disregard for the law and life. Everyone has the right to use the road in a legal manner without losing their lives.
  15. Connie ou thoughts and prayers are with you and the Oudshoorn cycling community.
  16. Konaman you are probably right. It is not a road that I would wish to ride for the reasons you point out. However, yellow or no yellow lines cyclists are legally permitted to use the road. They should be able to use the road without fear that they will be killed. Motorists coming from the opposite direction from the front or behind should drive in such a manner that they will overtake or pass when it is safe to do so. The problem is we have little or no patience and drive too fast. This was 6:05 in the morning (good visibiity, open road) in a rural area for goodness sake.
  17. It is absolutely reprehensible that there are people making unsubstantiated claims about the accident that ocurred in which 3 cyclists were killed this morning. Only those who were there and the driver know the truth. The truth it seems is that a driver overtook another vehicle into oncoming traffic. The traffic was in the form of a group of cyclists of which 3 are now dead. That there are people on the hub with the arrogance and heartlessess to be so cold and indifferent to the right of cyclists to use the roads legaly like any other 'vehicle' is beyond me. There are really sick people out there who have no regard for other road users and have the audacity to insinuate that cyclists are the bad guys. Slow down, drive your car according to the set speed limits and obey all the road rules before you criticise others. My condolensces to those who lost their lives - I will wear a black armband to mourn the loss of humanity! Ageless2010-03-08 14:33:49
