  16. How about a commuting bike? Road and Mountain bikes are not suited to riding in your suit and tie.
  17. http://www.camissabicycles.co.za/2012/11/cape-town-urban-bicycle-expo-mark-your.html Friday 14 December 2012 between 14h00 and 20h00 sees the first ever Cape Town Urban Bicycle Expo at The Palms Lifestyle and Decor Centre, 145 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock. From fixies, vintage to folding bikes, maps, helmets, bags, e-bikes - there will be a full range of urban bicycling options there for you to see and experience. Pop in, take a test ride, have a beer - it promises to be great afternoon.
  18. h Hehe. If I went left I would end up on the N2 :-) How do you indicate "straight" on a bicycle? I reckon I am happier sharing Albert Road with taxis. Maybe I should go slower down there, tempting as it is to feel the wind and hear the tyres humming.
  19. What do you guys think about coming out of Pinelands where Forest Drive becomes Raapenberg? I do it but I worry about my kids who do not yet have road sense. Once you get to Mowbray or Rondebosch you are pretty much OK again.
  20. I would love to cycle more, but I work near where my daughters go to school aroud Rondebosch / Newlands main Road. Coming out of Pinelands down the dual carriageway with two offramps to the N2 where people often misjudge how fast I am going can be scary. One really has to trust that nothing goes wrong, knowing that without the metal box around me at best I would end up badly bruised and scraped. Falling on tar at 30 to 40km/h cannot be good for you. I am kind of prepared to do this by myself, but with my 11 and 13yo daughters? Not so much. We could ride along the pavement but the pedestrian crossing there is not so great either. So then what? It is frustrating. That painted stripe down the side of the road does nothing for my peace of mind. Once you reach Rondebosch Common it is all fine with proper cycle lanes and quiet side roads pretty much all the way. There is a cycle lane going in on Albert Road Woodstock but the kids will probably be finished school before we get a cycle lane out of Pinelands.

  23. Dutch style Opa en Omafietse are not retro. They are standard in the civilized world, where dynamo powered lights are mandated by law and people cycle to work in suits and dresses and high heels. http://www.copenhagencyclechic.com/
  24. Cheers lloydkayak, I'll look in to side roads. To be honest I feel safer bombing down Albert Road Woodstock in peak traffic with a lane to myself as the traffic is pretty slow, than I do on that part of Campground Road where there is not enough place for a car to overtake a bike safely if there is oncoming traffic - which there usually is. As for confidence, for me it needed a crisis like having stuff to do without a car to get me out there. And you are right. Around town bikes are just as fast as cars if you include parking. I raced my wife to the Biscuit Mill the other day - she in a car, me on my old school Dutch Opafiets. I got there first, by about 30 seconds. And rain? No problem. Put on a raincoat, ffs. I do not get any wetter on a bike than walking. As for breaking a sweat, never having cycled a race in my life I do not ride very fast. GPS on my phone says I average around 20km/h.
  25. And yes, we do have a bike room. It only has room for 6 or maybe 7 bikes though.
