  1. Doc , I spent about 2 hrs on internet and googled several reports on mtb tyres (actually that's why I agreed o the Geax as I had seen great reports on it), got advice from 2 Sani2c mates , spoke to salesman at Kyalami cycle , Solomans and cycle lab , I never prompted for any specific tyre , I explained how where and how much I rode I asked what he suggested and then asked why they suggest that tyre , honestly the salesmen couldn't tell me, some just said , "its what I ride with" (other than the fact in almost all cases so not a CL thing that they started with a R800 tyre..) I think that qualifies as doing some research ... having said that I expect in a cycle shop of any decent nature that the salesman can give a reasonable opinion as to what a components benefits are .... so much for a friendly heads up on poor service and extra charges ... it appears as many of the quick assumptions and attacks on a "noob" or a rant are paid by bike shops to defend their poor deliverable.. if you happy or had a pleasant experience I'm glad for you stick with what works
  2. UH how do you get noobs into the sport if you take advantage at the beginning ... maybe noob to MTB but raced many years of Enduro and was never charged to fit the tube when I replaced a tyre
  3. Everyone seems to be bragging about mileage on their tyre 3000-5000-6400km, I unfortunately had a sharp stone puncture the back (after about 400km on a new bike) which took 2 plugs to seal and decided to just keep riding it but Sunday at NF (after 600km) had a side wall pinch which rendered the front gone as well , so off to get some quotes finally settled on Maxxis Cross marks (i'm no racing snake) and start to look for the best price , I finally speak to Cycle lab (where I bought the bike) and they quote R649 so I say I'll go to Solomon's as they at R549 (and R50 to fit) ! " No problem we will match bring the bike in now if you want it for Friday" which I quickly arrange with the wife , later that afternoon I get a call from the workshop, "sorry we don't have Maxxis but we can put on GEAX at R799 " . After much back and forth they find a Maxxis for back tyre and then say its R619 until I remind them they already quoted R549 and tell them they should supply the Geax at that price since I have brought the bike in already . Sorry no can do but we will do the Geax at R699 , finally collect bike but invoice still at full price , call the guys to arrange a price change then see labour R85 to fit a tyre + labour R30 to add sealant , I query and show that they charge for sealant further down " oh no that's labour to put the sealant in " so R115 to fit tyre (excl sealant)... surely the price of changing a tubeless tyre includes adding sealant and pumping it up... didn't check but do they charge twice to fit a tubed tyre once for tyre and once for tube. Admittedly when I expressed I was unhappy and wouldn't be back again but would rather go a little further to Solomon's the salesman's asked what can they give me on the house .. "nothing , I don't want anything free ,just treat me fairly from the beginning and don't mess me around" ....Very irritated.
