  1. Hi. Out of desperation, I recently had to replace my 11 speed DI2 Dura Ace inner derailleur cage, and due to lack of parts in SA as I believe Shimano no longer supports 11 speed, I had an oversized pulley cage retrofitted. It looks very nice, I must say and there's no problem with shifting, however I noticed a distinct difficulty in climbing. (I ran out of gears), which wasn't previously a problem. I'd like to know if a larger pulley wheel would have an effect on gear ratio, and if so is there a fix for this? Do I now need to replace my cassette and chain as well? Thanks in advance.
  2. Hi,Im maxelo Baloyi,a beginner cyclist who’s 15 and a student at the local Louis Trichardt high school in Limpopo looking for donations in spare parts to help with performance and the coming schools MTB races along with other MTB events in a month. I’ve got a second hand ,entry level size S .Scott Contessa Scale 710(2015 model) bought from a local.I’m looking for help in possibly replacing the worn out cassette, chain and possibly replace other dead beat parts which were over ridden by the last owner. Any donations or help would be greatly appreciated as my family has to stick to their budget and can’t afford to break the bank currently
  3. Hi Guys, I'm a newbie looking for advice on picking between two cassettes: SHIMANO SLX 10 SPD CASSETTE (HG81) SHIMANO XT 10 SPD CASSETTE (M771) I don't care about weight, I'd just choose the more durable of the two. I plan on using it with this chain: SHIMANO XT 10 SPD CHAIN (HG95) Any help would be very appreciated.
  4. I have a DT Swiss wheelset with a 105 11 speed cassette fitted. I've used it since around Nov '18 and after riding in the rain twice in the week before the World Funride Champs (and washed her well each time), it started making a noise last week - when I stripped everything (I got a little bit of grit in the mix), I noticed that the loose gears had started leaving indents in the freehub - I had bought it new before I started riding the wheelset. The cassette has 3 or 4 gears grouped together and the rest are loose. I am wondering if there are any (affordable) 11 speed cassette's out there that have bigger groupings - like 4,4,1,1,1? I spend a lot of time mid-range on the back, so having a couple grouped together will spread the load across a few contact points rather than just one. Obviously googling has yielded no results, so opening up to the knowledge base of the hub. TIA
  5. Hi, I bought a road bike with Shimano 105 components and an 12-28 rear cassette. I have found that the 12 tooth does not give me a high enough speed and want to replace it with an 11 tooth gear. All the bike shops I have been to want to sell me a complete cassette with an 11 tooth gear but not just the 11 tooth gear itself. There is virtually no wear on the cassette and it makes no sense to replace the complete cassette. Is there anywhere I can get just the 11 tooth gear for the 10 speed Shimano 105? Or do I have to replace the complete cassette? All advice appreciated. Denis
  6. Hey guys, I broke a chain a few weeks back riding some of that momentum killing crap at Big Red Barn. I didn’t think much of it after getting my chain back on, and for a few rides I was thinking that something is just way off with my shifting and it was just bugging me. Tonight I changed out my cable housing for nicer Shimano housing in orange and decided to to do the whole setup from scratch. When setting the high limit screw, I noticed a slightly bent tooth on my 50t cog. Since it’s Alu, I knew it was unlikely to bend back, but it was in the way of smooth shifting for the 42t. So i gave it a shot. Figured I could slightly tug it out the way with some leather and pipe pliers. It just broke off. Is it possible to replace only the one cog? I’m guessing it isn’t since the cogs are pinned together. Do you think it is a really bad thing to ride like this for a couple of months until I can replace it? If I do this, do you have any recommendations to not cause any extreme wear on the chain? I’m pretty disappointed because this groupset is basically brand new and I don’t have money to replace a Cassette now. This really sucks big time!
  7. Good Friday afternoon to all Hubbers. I recently bought a chain I've been looking for for ages, but I'm wrestling with the thought of putting it on. As my thread title suggests, I know it's standard practice to replace the chain and cassette simultaneously. I just got a new chain/cassette combo in November. I'm willing to keep the chain as a spare, but new Ultegra cassettes aren't exactly small change, but I'd prefer to spend that money somewhere else (thank heavens I don't have DA). Mileage on the chain/cassette combo is approx. 3500km. So, recommendations?
  8. I'm a bit of a noob here, please can someone give me some advice? I have a mountain bike with SRAM Eagle 1x12 groupset. I want to have an extra rear wheel to use with my trainer with a trainer specific tire. Can I use a wheel with a 1x11 cassette at the back? Will it cause problems if I do that? Thanks!

  11. After about 15 years of singlespeeding I’ve finally got a bike with gears again. I bought it second-hand, and it looks like the chain and/or cassette are worn and will need to be replaced. It’s a 2×9 setup, and that suits me, so I’ll probably just get a 9-speed XT cassette and a couple of chains. Seems to be the best value for money option, and the gear range suits me. (I think it was probably a 3×9 originally, but the big ring has been replaced with a bash ring.) But, for the future, will I be able to just pop on a 10-speed cassette instead? (Assuming I change the derailleur and shifter too, obviously.) Or is the freewheel body spacing or spline pattern different? The hub is a Sun Ringlé − not sure which model. I’m trying to catch up on 15 years of tech development as quickly as I can − clutch derailleurs, NW chainrings, boost spacing… it’s an exciting and confusing new world! And expensive − I remember why I went singlespeed in the first place, especially with all this chain slip, bad shifting, etc. None of that with my fat BMX chains, even with really worn chainrings. Also, I assume that SRAM 9-speed is compatible with Shimano 9-speed, 10-speed with 10-speed, etc? I have SRAM X9 shifters, X0 rear derailleur, and Shimano XT front derailleur, but the Shimano chain and cassette options seem to be easier to get here and good value for money, particularly in the 9-speed range.
  12. Just came across this and wondered if anyone has pulled the trigger on the One Up 50T rear sprocket and what they thought of it, what the best use would be and what an ideal trail front ring would be. I run a 30 front with a 40 (might be a 42) rear and that does find for most things. It just looks so weird and massive. Not sure if it's available locally. http://int.oneupcomponents.com/products/50t-shark-sprocket-18t-1x11 http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0573/2837/products/OneUp-Components-50T-Shark-Sprocket-Green-Front-Assembled-M700-Evil-Following-966_grande.jpeg?v=1458233146
  13. We have two Gaint Expressway 1 folding bikes. I want to change the gearing to better meeting touring needs: Currently, the cassette is specified at 11x30 and want to replace it with a 34T cassette (R330 olympiccycles.co.za). I want to replace the 52T chainring with a 38T to 42T (5 bolt - 130 BCD). Replacing the cassette seems to be easy via olympiccycles.co.za in Claremont but they seem to have a problem with getting a 38T to 42T (5 bolt - 130 BCD). (It does not have to be Gaint originals). Not sure why. Do you know of any Cape Town southern suburbs bike shop that can assist? I was able to find a 39T at $18 from Aliexpress. I hope you can assist. BTW: I only learned yesterday what BCD meant
  14. We went down to the Eastern Cape over December and had some wonderful rides on the MTB trails. I picked up some rust on my Scott Spark 920 chain and cassette despite all of efforts due to the excessive rain we had and the bike sleeping outside on my car locked away a few nights. Can anyone help me with a solution please? you can post on this treat or email me at cbk64@telkomsa.net God Bless Charl
  15. HI Guys, So time to replace my cassette in earlier posts i i had mentioned damage down to my 10tha and 9th gear after a damaged freebody created a lot of chain jumps resulting in damaged teeth and a now permanently jumpy 10 and 9th gear. So i got some advice from an unnamed bike shop and though I would see what you guys had to say on it, I thrash my MTB hard and put a lot of pressure down on the crank (103kgs) lol, so i was advise to go with the heavier cassette like a Deore or SLX instead of the XT range as they just get lighter and for what im doing im not stressed on weight i just want apart that will take its beatings day in and day out. So any advice on a chain and Cassette currently im looking at Deore or SLX cassette and chain. Cheers
  16. I have a small issue which I would like some help from those that are in the know on the hub. I have two sets of wheels, one Novatec sprint (2012) and one Giant PR2 (Standard on a giant TCR 2(2012). They both have shimano 28-11 cassettes on. one is 105 and the other is Ultegra. When I switch between the two I have to either tighten the tension or loosen the rear mech depending on which wheel I have changed from. I am a little confused as for the need to adjust the mech, I dont touch the limits only the barrel. Is it in my mind or is there a difference on the free hubs? Thanks in advance. (I have attached a picture of the Novatec rims in question, because I think all threads need pictures )
