  1. Noticed that during the Montecasino classic race a "Litter Zone" sign had been put up on Sterkfontein Caves Road about 200m from the corner to the R563. Direction was going towards the R540. Appears that the "Litter zone" sign was put up by race organisers for the Montecasino Classic. Today riding past the area it is full of trash - litter from the race - 100s of gel wrappers and random junk from the riders. The "Litter zone" sign was gone... Was this litter zone created by race organisers? who was responsible for it? Why create a litter zone - when the zone will not be cleaned up afterwards? Support for the race has to be questioned now - as the environment was left in a worse off state due to this race. Poor show.

  3. Hi guys Just prepping for the upcoming CT Cycle Tour and wanted to hear from you guys what you do to prepare 2/3 weeks out from an event you haven't really trained a sufficient amount for. Training wise, time on the bike as well as nutrition advice all welcome. Goodluck to everyone participating, holding thumbs for good weather.
  4. Just received the dreaded "postponed/cancelled" mailer - second year running it doesnt happen ???? They raise a valid point, under current restrictions, outdoor events are limited to 100 people - is the Knysna Cycle tour next to be pushed out only a couple of weeks away?
  5. Hello Community, I decided after 3 months of advertising my park & ride venue in Lanseria attracting one club who have supported me. I need to grow it. As we know people are creatures of habit. I am located just off the R552 (200m) on the edge of Fourways entering Lanseria. Perfect location. Here is the million dollar question to the community, what is the best way to get traffic here to my venue?I've thought about offering riding lessons for youngsters, short courses like safety, how to clean your bike, easy maintenance, open day where there are stores specific to cyclists. Some help here please!! The plots perfectly placed for all the cyclists travelling from Broadacres shopping centre in Fourways. Just so much safer to park here. Many thanks Tracey
  6. Hi all I've been very graciously sponsored to ride the upcoming Sani2C, this coming December 2020. I'm looking forward to it but I'm also apprehensive haha . My main concerns are the altitude, heat and humidity, but generally I just don't know what to expect. Could anyone share some advice on the event? Like anything you think one should take with them that might not be obvious? - Would you recommend any specific bike spares? - How difficult are those floating bridges? - How easy is it to charge a phone? - What is cellular coverage like en-route and in the villages? - Do water points have low sugar stuff like baby potatoes? I've shored up my bike setup with a new saddle (which I've spent a few hours riding now - it RAWKS) and a general bike service. I'm also planning on carrying an USWE backpack for water (3L). I'm thinking of carrying a first aid kit in my backpack and a satellite tracker. Any advice really or just say hi so we can share in the excitement (or fear) EOF

  9. Is it just me or is there a lot less mountain biking events by PPA this year? I had a look at https://www.pedalpower.org.za/events/ and was shocked to see there were only 4 (at the time of writing) for this year. Why is that?
  10. Why are there hardly any events listed under the Hub lately? Many events through other media not listed....for a favourite web joint for bikers this is disappointing.
  11. There's apparently a mountain bike race happening this weekend (17/18 November 2018) at Meerendal - but there doesn't seem to be any mention of it on Bikehub ? Maybe my search skills on the incredible edible internet suck ? Is anyone here taking part in it ? Why is it called "invitational" (especially seeing as people can sign up for it) ? It looks like it'll go through the Dorstberg gate (!!!) at the end of the second day.
  12. Hello, I want to find out if there is one website that lists all cycling events in South Africa in one place? Currently it looks like it's here and there and most websites only lists some events. Thanks!
  13. So this race/event/trail festival has become something of a bucket list event, and it's in a bucket list place. I have been agitating on the hub intermittently for years promoting the riding in South America, so I've decided to put my money where my mouth is. I'll be going through next year (maybe to participate in the actual race, but mostly to enjoy the riding, atmosphere, and do some ground research for a project proposal I'm working on). My plan is to rent a house for a couple of weeks (one before, the week of the race/festival, and the week after). Dates for the racing are April 23-29th 2018. Will have about five lodging spaces available in the house but I have a number of contacts in the area who run hotels and B & B's so numbers aren't too much of an issue and most budgets can be accommodated I have lived in Ollantaytambo and guided most of the trails in the area (some still on my bucket list and I'll be checking them off this time). So if any of you South African hubbers are keen to explore, ride insane trails and have some adventure (will be doing some hiking and trekking too, and of corse a run to Machu Picchu is obvious) check out the link (note there is also a hardtail category so its not just for gravity nuts) and respond.cool beans. http://incaavalanche.com
  14. Always used the Babba’s races as my go to race if there was nothing else on. There were 12 races a year held at Babba’s Lodge (northern Pretoria). At the December race it was mentioned that there will be changes. Looking at the website (www.francosport.co.za) it seems Babba’s is no more?

  19. Hi all, I was informed of this over the weekend, and was wondering if anyone has done one of these multi-sport events (running, kayak, cycling)? http://www.kineticgear.co.za/Events/Multisport-Challenge If so, please give some feedback about these events. Are these organised properly? Safety in general at these events? I see on the website that they advise that rain/lightning/thunder won't stop the event from going on. There is one coming up in October that I am interested in, but would like to hear some more from people who have done them. Thanks Kev

  22. Ive been working on cycling events for quite a while and have noticed a common letdown for participants, the quality of race/event packs - the gear and gadgets that they receive. Multistage race events offer a larger more expensive selection of gear and gifts in general but is it what cyclists really want or need. What would you put in and be realistic Look forward to some ideas and hopefully the guys can look at this and keep up to date what we all really want.

PENNYPINCHERS SILVERSTAR MTB CHALLENGE - ENTRY DEADLINE http://i3.cmail1.com/ei/j/B0/F40/CAA/csimport/2015Silverstarlogo.113542.jpg ENTRIES FOR SATURDAY'S PENNYPINCHERS SILVERSTAR MTB CHALLENGE CLOSE TONIGHT AT 23H59 (MONDAY, 31 AUGUST). RIDERS WHO WOULD STILL LIKE TO GET THEIR ENTRIES IN, SHOULD GO TO WWW.ASGEVENTS.CO.ZA Silverstar Casino, "the West Rand's favourite entertainment destination", is bracing itself for the onslaught of a huge field of mountain-bikers who are ready to take on the iconic ride on Saturday. The event follows a new route along the Krugersdorp Ridge and boasts a wonderful atmosphere at the revamped Silverstar Casino. Those riders who dine out at the venue in the week leading up to the event will be able to sit and watch the highlights of last year's event on the massive big screen in the Piazza area. The big screen will also broadcast the prize giving function live on the day, hosted by Johnny Koen, which will enable everyone who is having lunch after their ride to be a part of the action. The event starts in the new top-end open-air parking lot at Silverstar and finishes inside the big white Super Dome, adjacent to the Piazza area. A supervised bike park will be set up inside the Dome so that riders can leave their bikes in a secure area if they'd like to go and get a bite to eat, and, as per usual, the bike wash will also be set up. Riders who would still like to get on the start line, need to get their entries in at www.asgevents.co.za The Silverstar Challenge route has always been known as a challenging task and this year will be no different, although the 20km ride doesn't have major technical obstacles, with exception of the final drop down to Silverstar from the mountain. Route director, Darren Herbst, said riders could look forward to beautiful forested sections, open fields and rocky trails with some spectacular views over the West Rand. “On a clear day, you can see all the way to Pretoria.” From the top of Protea Ridge, participants plunge down through the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden en route to the finish. “The last three kilometres will hair-raising for a few but exhilarating for most,” laughed Herbst. He said the casino finishing area, with its surrounding restaurants and children’s zone, would keep the whole family entertained for the day. Enter at www.asgevents.co.za. Alternatively, find Silverstar MTB Challenge on Facebook or follow @silverstarMTB. Broadcast by SuperSport Medals to all finishers. 24. Trans Baviaans Cyclists – Let’s Make a Difference Pedal for Prosthesis Initiative – Caleb Swanepoel We believe that the ability to endure the Trans Baviaans is minor in comparison to what lies ahead of Caleb. So here's the thing....it takes a mere nano second for an unexpected incident to alter the ordered and anticipated course of one's life! This life changing occurrence took place in the life of 20 year old Varsity student, Caleb Swanepoel, on the 27th June this year, whilst on a family holiday at Buffels Bay. Out in the surf with his brothers having a great time body surfing...and then BOOM !!....the nano second came and in a flash he was on the sand, minus one leg, bleeding to death and struggling to survive. A miracle intervened causing the main artery in what was left of his right leg to spasm which effectively saved his life. If that hadn't happened I probably wouldn't be writing this to you!! He survived the ordeal but what now? The entire physical, emotional, educational and financial course of his life has irrevocably been re programmed. We are going to make these changes less of a challenge by smoothing the financial difficulties with which he will be confronted for a long long time. Why Caleb? Why us? Well we are two enthusiastic mountain bikers who, through a series of bizarre co incidences got to know about this young man which took him out of the statistic category in our lives and resulting in his cause resonating strongly within both of us. We like what we see! Caleb has never asked for anything, but we know that his path to rehabilitation is going to be an immense financial burden as an appropriate prosthesis with all the associated therapy costing over One Million SA Rands. Yes you read correctly!! Medical Aid trauma benefits don't get close. On this note we appeal to you, about to embark on an endurance event of the highest order, to assist us please. When you cross the finish line your challenge will have been conquered and it will be over until the next time you choose to tackle it. Help us to bring Caleb's finish line closer!! Make a contribution and help Caleb reach his dreams! Irene and I will be at registration to acknowledge this by giving you a helmet sticker. Wear the sticker for the race and show YOUR SUPPORT. An advance contribution will be appreciated just so that we can get your sticker pack ready. Any last minute donations will readily be accepted at registration.
