  1. Hello fellow hubbers. I'm wondering if anyone has had injuries pertaining to the abductor pollicis Longus muscle and can remember things like the cause, injury extent and recovery? I'm reading interweb results in the meantime, but would appreciate real world insight as well. What happened: rode an extremely rocky trail, hurt left arm muscle somehow when I thumb-shifted while fork took a hit, recovered over a few months, hurt right arm muscle somehow and now seeking to speed up the recovery of this injury. Both times I didn't experience pain until a few hours after the ride, so there must be inflammation present - oh and forgot to add there is visible swelling. It hurts when I use my right arm for anything more intensive than typing and I'm getting flashbacks of how sad it was seeing my mtb stand for so long edit: I did search the forums first, but only found knee related results edit 2: adding more info that I remembered.
  2. Commented on another thread but, everyone only reeds the first post. I need some help/advise PLEASE! I broke my scaphoid almost exactly 6 years ago. At first I didn't think much of it and only got it diagnosed a few months later. Had surgery and a compression screw fitted to get it fixed and, at first, all looked well. I was told it is not healing quickly but, signs look good. Also, the stiffness and slight pain I was experiencing is normal for someone who had had work done to the wrist and that range of motion (ROM) would never fully return. Fast forward almost 6 years: Had a laps in skill end of last year in a rock garden, otb and broke my hand (same one as the wonky wrist). X-rays diagnosed a really bad hand but also, a wrist that was not looking good. To cut a long story (with lots of time off the bike) short. I've been diagnosed with: For the doctors and googlers: avascular necrosis of the proximal pole of the scaphoid, for every one else: a piece of my wrist has died. The generally accepted next step is four-corner fusion. Basically a semi-fused wrist. I will have limited ROM, difficult to make the call but probably 50deg in total at best. And pain should go away. So my questions: 1. Anyone on here had this procedure before and still ride? How are you doing, what are the challenges etc. 2. Have anyone on here had any alternative treatment to the one described above, pros, cons etc. No need to comment on here, you can send me a direct message if that would be better for you but, commenting on here might get the questions exposed a bit more opinions. Any recommendations for specialists, rather DM me. PS. I'm not a road rider (nothing against them), off-road is life, and I would really like to will still be on a mtb, maybe an e-mtb, when I'm 80.
  3. Hi all I am hoping someone can shed some light on a fall a friend of mine took in the 25km Mountain bike ride on Sunday he was in Batch B5 and fell about 15 to 18km into the race just after the turn off Cactus road, we are trying to determine what happened and any information would be appreciated thank you Dayne
  4. I stubbed my toe against the leg of our bed yesterday. Was pretty sore and made me think of Slowbee's toe injury. Not quite as spectacular but hurt like crazy. This is what it looked like a day later. Broken maybe? Who knows. Just iced it and went for a ride.
  5. Hi guys I'll be consulting at a new sports medicine practice in the Netcare Waterfall Hospital. Also orthopaedic surgeons, physios, biokineticists, podiatrists etc. Give us a shout for your cycling injuries and illnesses or pre-season medicals. 6. My girlfriend and I have been only been MTBing for a few months. We do easy trails and light rides. Last weekend we rode in Koeberg; she came round a turn a little fast, hit some sand, went OTB and dislocated her shoulder. She had surgery on Friday and is having a painful recovery. I have always been a cautious person and consequently a cautious MTBer, but her injury has made me even more hesitant. I know that there are two types of cyclists: those that have fallen and those that are going to fall, but my question is, how common are serous MTB injuries, the kind that require surgery or extended recovery?
  7. I have recently developed an injury that I can only put down to MTBing, both the muscles/ tendons in my forearms are giving me problems near to my elbow. The injury is more painful in the right forearm, but in the same spot on the left forearm. I get a burning sensation in my right forearm, and it's even painful just lifting a coffee mug. This is really starting to get me down The injury has kept me off the bike for almost three weeks now, and does not appear to be getting much better. I was advised rest/ ice via a telephone call to the physio that did my bike set-up recently. The problem does not seem to be getting any better though, even after 3 weeks , so I would like to go see someone, problem is who? How do I now if I need to see either a Physio or Biokineticist? Which of the two is a better to see? Could anyone recommend a person to see on the West Coast(Milnerton/ Woodbridge area) or possibly in Jozi(Northcliff area) Many Thanks.
