  1. Hi Hubbers, I am new to MTB and the bug bit me hard... I have been spending the last couple of months on a 2016 Silverback Sola 4 hardtail and have been riding a lot. I have been riding before work, after work, taking leave from work just to ride the bike at trails which is further out... when I am not riding I am either watching Youtube (GMBN, BKXC, Berm Peak etc.) or reading all things and everything MTB. The time has come to dip into my funny money and buy a MTB... I have a budget of R35k (max) and am really looking for a new dual suspension bike which I can grow with and develop my skills. I have seen a lot of threads of a similar nature where the posters noted some of the bikes they were looking at. I thought it be cool to leave this open ended and see what bikes get recommended within the budget and for the area and type of riding I want to do. I am based in Pretoria close to Wolwespruit and Red Barn - these are the trails I have been riding before and after work and will also be the trails that I continue to ride the most. I have also taken the bike out to Rosemary Hill, Buffeldrift, PWC Bike Park and did a single track mission through Johanneburg (think it was in the Craighall area). Not a xc racer, in it for the fun but would proabably as I get fitter want to try different things... maybe a 3 day race or something of that nature but at the moment just loving the trails and the features. That was a bit long winded but just wanted to share some of my stoke... I really appreciate any guidance.
  2. Hi Guys! My wife and an old friend have recently hornswoggled me into getting on a bike for the first time in 15 years by entering me in the Jacaranda Off the Beaten Track race. To see if I could still sit a saddle we borrowed an old 21 speed Nishiki and went for the 17km MTB trail at Red Barn in Centurion. At 15.7km I promptly came off and tore a nice gash in my forearm. Some twisted handle bars and a short ER trip later I was in such a good mood you'd swear I'd won something. The race came and went and long story short (well, not that short) I'm looking to buy a Mountain Bike. Money is tight (true story), but I've managed to find a few that could meet my needs nicely, and was wondering if any of you might have any opinions regarding them: https://www.gumtree.co.za/a-sports-bicycles-fitness/edenvale/silverback-stride-10-mens-mountain-bike/1001961785400910248487209 https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/241287-fuji-nevada-14-large-price-drop/ https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/243528-titan-sport-29er-2015/ https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/244430-titan-expert-29r-for-sale/ I'm currently leaning towards the Titan Expert because of the reviews and forum advice I've seen. The Fuji also seems quite decent, but I'm not familiar with the make of some of the components. I'm about 1.8m tall and weigh around 90kg, so a Large frame should suit me well (I think). If you have any views on any of the above bikes I'd really appreciate your input.
  3. How do I know which bike to buy? I have recently started cycling as a new hobby and I have already owned and got rid of 2 bikes in one month. I bought my first bike same day I joined bikehub.co.za. My first one was Merida big 7 TFS 100, it didn't feel comfortable so I swapped for Momsen AL129 which I later sold. I'm 1.68m tall, weigh 70kg. What are the steps I should know when I buy a mountain bike? I'm short but I don't want a 26" mountain bike. My budget is R5000
  4. i dont usually ask for advice on cycling matters, but for the first time in many a year ive been stumped. My better half has an insane fear of cycling stemming from a childhood crash into a wall. I have been trying to reteach her how to ride a bike. now ive followed the following steps Step 1: get bike Step 2: get Helmet Step 3: fit bike and helmet Step 4: find open stretch of lawn. and this is where it all falls to pieces once on the bike she starts to freak out. never mind when it starts to move... and at walking pace she has a full blown panic attack. how do i get her to get the confidence to get going? ive been cycling for way to long to even remotely understand her fear.. please please please help..
  5. Hey Hubbers, I'm a prospective MTBer looking to make my first purchase. I've done a fair amount of reading on this forum so I'm slowly getting an idea of things. I don't want to get a complete entry-level bike that I'm going to have to upgrade soon. I'll also be doing most of my riding in Dullstroom - very rocky and rather hilly. So it's gotta be able to withstand the conditions (as does my soft behind). A mixture of cross country and (rocky) trail. I'm about 1.84/1.85m - so probably a Large frame? 650b or 29er? (personal preference I guess) I'm looking at a max budget of about 10k (MAYBE a little more, depending on how much I spend on a car) (I know all the rest of the gear adds up too) Been to two shops so far and had the following suggestions in that price range: GT Zaskar 9R Sport http://www.gtbicycles.co.za/2014%20GT%20Bicycles%20Zaskar%209R%20Sport.html Silverback Sola 3 http://www.silverbacklab.com/bike/mountain/silverback-sola-3/ It doesn't have to be new, I don't mind buying second-hand. I have had a look at the classifieds. But then I'd need some advice on what to look out for in terms of components etc. Thanks so much everyone, Grant
  6. After much debate I have decided to start training for a triathlon which means a bike. I'm looking to spend somewhere in the region of around R15-17k to leave myself another R3-5k for the rest of the necessities like helmet, shoes etc keeping to a nice round R20k all in for the first instalment (spending more is inevitable). After much reading and chatting to some mates in the know I have settled on a 105 groupset as the only real condition of what I'm getting with the rest of it pretty much up in the air. I'd love some advice on brands for both bike and equipment as well as the best places to go shopping around for new stuff. Thanks in advance.
  7. I wash my bike more often than my car, I've ordered bits of bike online from China, I've recorded rides on a GoPro, is it too soon to drop the noob tag?
