  1. Hi, I apologise if this is the incorrect place to post on this topic. I need some advice please. I bought a new 2023 Silverback Stride Sport on the 03-02-2024 from Cycle Lab in Lynnwood. Bike was marked down from R12,000 to R8,000. At the time, I thought it was a good deal. I am 49 years old, 85kg, plus bike and gear altogether is about 105kg. Well within the max total of 120kg. After about 32 days the freehub started slipping. Took me a week to diagnose and confirm the issue. Both hubs drone/squeak. Said freehub slips when in 7th, 8th gear on an incline pedalling hard. I ride the bike on dirt roads in and around Bashewa, Pretoria East. Nothing heavy. Took back to CL and I must say the staff were very helpful. Great team. I am awaiting a warranty replacement which is been done as we speak. There are freehub issues on this model, not sure if other Silverback models are affected for those thinking of buying. My main complaint however, is: the bike is advertised on their site with a certain spec. The bike I bought has a different spec. https://www.cyclelab.com/product/1017956-bike-mtb-ht-alu-slvback-stride-sport-my23 Bike is advertised as having: - SRAM chain (PYC chain supplied) - Shimano rotors (Tektro supplied, which is reasonable given the brakes are Tektro) - Shimano TX505 hubs (cannot see a name on FH or RH?) - chain guide (no chain guide supplied) Of all the things, the most upsetting is the hubs. I feel the supplied hubs are simply awful. Besides that, I feel it is false advertising and I have been cheated. I am going to ask Jaco, the store manager next week when I collect the bike, what, if anything can be done. What are my options? Am I over reacting? Do I file a complaint with the CPA? First speak with the store manager and take it from there? I am well aware that manufacturers and hence retailers cover themselves with the typical legal jargon of "specifications are subject to change without prior notice" and "images are for illustrative purposes only". Sigh. Thank you.
  2. Whilst I was out Cycling last week, I bust my SHIMANO Crank. How does one Brake a CRANK? Can I claim for a Warranty, it' been Barely Used. Please give me your thoughts, Thanks. David
  3. Hi All, I'm new to Bike Hub but I took my 2017 Scott Spark in for a service almost 4 weeks and the mechanics noticed that both the swingarm and the frame (at the seat tube) were cracked. It took over 2 1/2 weeks to get a response - the swingarm was warrantied but not the frame as they claim the seat post clamp was installed incorrectly. I have taken this up with Scott as nowhere in the users' manual is this stated that it needs to be a certain way and I received my bike from the bike shop that assembled it with the seat clamp installed as is. The 2017 and 2018 users manuals do not stipulate the seat clamp orientation but the 2019 one does, although it just mentions that it must be installed correctly and does not sat what is correct. Has anyone else had this problem? It's now almost 4 weeks later and I still have no bike to ride! I'm training for the Epic and need to ride but this is so unfortunate. There has been nothing from Scott International to date and Scott local sent an email to me this week for a loan frame but nothing has come of it. Such bad service.
  4. On the 10/8/19 I left my brand new Shimano Saint pedals at CWC for a warranty replacement. Shane the warranty and claims lady explained to me that they needed to be sent to JHB. 3 days later I followed up and was told that the pedals would be shipped back for collection at CWC. It is now 23/8/19 and my bike cannot be ridden because it does not have pedals. I have had to repeatedly phone and follow up about my pedals every 3 days. I am tired of being told Shane is busy with a customer and would I like to leave a message and then not hearing anything from her. I have been given different stories about waiting times and Dawn Wing has now been thrown under the bus by Shane today saying that there has been a mix up with the deliveries. Things do go wrong but I expect to be kept up to date with phone calls, sms or email and clarification given by a customer facing employee. Shane has shown she needs training and she does not know how to do her job as a customer service person. I hope that CWC will provide the correct training to their employees and also note these instances in their performance reviews! This is absolutely the last time I buy anything from CWC.
  5. Good morning Hubland, Simple question - replaceable or not? Watch isn't even 2 months old.
  6. Hi all, So I am not new to the Hub however this is my first forum post. So basically I cracked my S works Epic 2015 frame that i bought brand new in 2016. The crack is situated on the seat post collar and i first noticed it when i hear a strange noise going of a couple roots. On the 20th of December (a day after noticing the crack) i took the frame to my local spez store where i purchased the bike from. They were incredibly helpful in suggesting the steps to go about a warranty claim. Needless to say they sent my frame over to Capetown for specialized head office to take a look. I waited an entire month (after being told it will take 14 days) just for the frame to be assessed and confirmed for a crack. I received a run down of the crack and how it has happened on many other frames as a result of over tightening the seatpost clamp and that warranty would not be granted. This struck me because my bike was literally just back from a fitment (with spez store) where they obviously do everything with torque wrenches. So obviously i had something to say and my bike shop backed me up and sent a follow on email stating they handled the bike etc. Another month later I receive an email just stating that my frame is back and a warranty has not been granted? Im not sure if this is a common issue that anyone else has experienced but it has really left me stranded for options. Im not exactly where to go from here? I know carbon repairing is an option but this obviously brings with it lower value of bike etc. Do i have a reason to be upset by these decisions or is this common practice? Any suggestions on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Mitch P.S I will try attach the spez review when i learn how.
  7. Hi all. So I am in search of an opinion from you guys. I bought some wheels, Shimano RS81 C24 wheels, in June 2016 (so basically 5 months ago). I have not been riding much and put around 1,500 km on them. On a recent ride I noticed some damage around the nipples on the rim (see the pictures) that seems to have been caused by corrosion or the carbon bubbling. I was naturally upset about this as I have never seen something like this and I am normally careful with my things. I took it back to CWC for a warranty claim but they said it's normal wear and tear and thus not a warranty claim. I went back again and they said they will come back to me, but I have not hear anything again. (I even went back for a 3rd time). I understand damage like this could occur after a few years, but I find it extreme to happen in such a short period of time. I have used multiple Mavic and other Shimano wheels with no problem over several years. I also had a google to see if there is more people with this issue and came to a BikeRadar forum where I guy had the same problem on a C24 DA wheel (basically the same rim, just a different hub) and his was replaced, as well as a person's commenting on the forum. So I find it reasonable to claim under warranty. [The forum - http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13064084] Please let me know your thoughts and opinions as I am trying to understand if I am reasonable or not. This is not to slander CWC at all, just to understand if I have a warranty claim that they aren't helping me with. Note: I have had great experiences with CWC in the past, hence my disappointment in how the matter is dealt with this time. I am just asking an opinion here, not trying to offend. Thanks [update - For those joining later. This was a to and from, ultimately a warranty claim and replacement done by CWC. They apologized to me and publicly here, so all is good in the world again.]
  8. Hey Guys So I see TakeAlot sells Met helmets and I want to take advantage of my Multiply rewards discount to get either the Rivale or the Manta. Does anyone have either of these helmets? Would you be so kind as to give a little feedback on the helmets please? Also, what is the warranty/backup service like from Met? What is there crash replacement policy? Thank you Mopkop
  9. Ok, here is my story On the 12th of July 2016 I walked into Lynwood cycles and saw the bike of my dreams standing there a Brand new Specialized Venge , The bike was sold as soon as it caught my eye I had the bike for a day when the first trouble started with the cable routing, where the gears could not keep the tension and the cables had to be rerouted by them. problems solved no issues Then the creeking started, this was about a week after my last visit , They disassembled the bike to figure out they did not have the tools to take the bottom bracket off So they basically took the chain rings off ,glued them with Loctite , They then told me that they had epoxied the BB's one side onto the frame? Alu on Alu epoxied? The next day they told me they decided to take the epoxy off again(I have not had the bike back in this time) When I eventually got my bike back, I noticed the BB scratched (obviously from using the wrong tools) The rear wheel was scratched on the Hub (and greased with about 200ml of grease to the extent of not even hearing the thing when freewheeling) I was told that the bike was still creeking and I should ride it until they had the tools to take the BB off, so I rode it like this until they eventually got the tools in, Took it back again, they apparently stripped the thing to the bearings, They told me if this solution does not solve the problem, they do not know what to do further? Got the bike back, and yes the creeking is still there Today was just the cherry on the cake when the derailleur overthrew the chain into the rear wheel and I was left stranded at the Suikerbos reserve, (this has never happened to me in over 10 years of cycling) I am real disappointed in the bike, but do not wish to "name and shame" Lynwood cycles as they have tried to help fix the problem, the thing here is the problem is not going away.. Every trip has had me going all the way from Vereeniging to Pretoria ..which I cannot afford in terms of time.. I would like to ask the people on this forum for help, Where do I stand with the warranty on this issue of specifically the creeking , Can this be claimed under a warranty from a legal perspective? I would really appreciate any help Regards Gerhard
  10. HI wise ones, i have a TREK Gary Fisher hifi pro 2011 model and have found a severe crack on the chain stay. Its bad enough that you can flex it and it opens. I bought the bike second hand so dont have a warranty. Have dropped the bike off at Cycle lab who are trying to find a replacement but from other forums i see its very difficult to find. Does anyone have any advice or has had the same problem with no warranty and can shed light on a positive outcome. Thanks,
  11. In October before W2W I took my bike to my LBS (who shall remain nameless as despite the story below I still like the shop), which has branches in several locations, for a major service including rear shock service. I was told by the mechanic that they cannot get seals from DT Swiss, so they just clean the shock out. Yes ok, whatever, you are the expert, do your thing, call me in a day or two and I will come and pay you. They know I don't mind paying for my bike, if something needs to be fixed, please alert me and continue. Ride W2W, return to Jhb and a week later go to Modder for a night race, only to discover there is zero air pressure in my shock. Someone has a pump on hand, so they pump it up and I manage to ride the 25km although it clearly wasn't functioning properly. Return to shop, they keep it for a day and then call me to collect. Being a female and trusting this shop, I dont ask too many questions, assuming they replaced a seal or something. No charge. This weekend, pack the bikes up and drive 300km to Van Reenen where we have booked into the Green Lantern Inn for 2 days of some serious LSD training. I managed to complete 30km on Saturday morning before my shock lost all pressure. Pumping it up wouldnt help, air goes straight through. Day of riding wasted. Luckily had a sick friend who was staying in the vicinity for the Trans Draak dry run so she loaned me her bike so that at least I got to ride on Sunday. Today, called a Scott representative, who tells me that the shop has null and voided my shock warranty because they should not have opened it themselves. It should have been sent to them (a mere 10 minutes away). The mechanic who did this has since left the shop. They have no explanation except to say he left a trail of similar stories in his wake. Shock will now finally be sent to DT Swiss to service, and I am getting a loan bike while this happens. Planning to ask them to at least carry the costs of the proper service, since I have already paid once for this job. I am quite dazed and confused that my reputable LBS has let me down like this.
  12. In late October 2009 I bought a ‘demo’ Commencal Meta4 frame from my LBS. They built it up for me using mostly slx parts. Bike was great, heavy, but comfortable, which is what I wanted. Did around 6000km on it, used it for ‘rides’ mainly, my Merida being the ‘week’ bike. In May/June 2014 I noticed a crack in the frame, close to the top tube/head tube junction. Took it back to the LBS. LBS contacted the agents, 3 year warranty I was told, so it had obviously expired. Fair enough. The LBS arranged a replacement from the agents (no idea who they are) for R1500 + shipping – just the frame, not the swing arm section. Again, fair enough, so I paid my money, received the frame and rebuilt the bike. Two weeks ago I notice a crack in more or less the same place, see the pic. I take it back to LBS, who make several phone calls, send pics etc, so they do all they can. Apparently, agents have a replacement frame, an 8 or 9 year old Meta4, but I need to again pay R1500 + shipping. What happened to the 3 year warranty? Why would I want to buy another frame that I know is prone to cracking? If it was replaced under warranty, sure! I’ve emailed Commencal home office in Andora, but no reply. This is not really a RANT, cause I don’t know who the agents are. MY LBS offered to give me the number, but I think it’s a waste of time my contacting them. If they won’t listen to my LBS, which obviously stocks and sells their product, why the hell would they listen to me? Before any wise comments, I still ride 26ers!!!!
  13. Life should be this simple. 1.Friday: Walk into Specialized Concept Store (West Rand Cycles) with a Camber carbon frame with a pivot point problem. 2. Shop owner says he has never seen such an issue before, calls Specialised, they confirm that they have never seen or heard of such a problem. No mention of such problem can even be found by trawling the web.... 3. Shop confirms the problem cannot be fixed and the frame front triangle is done for. 4. I fill out warranty form and leave the shop stressed out..... 5. 30 minutes later I get confirmation a warranty frame will be at the shop on Monday and will be shipped the same day. This is not just the front carbon triangle but the entire frame. 6. Monday collect new frame. 7. Tuesday: Ride it like I stole it. Note: You get what you pay for.......
  14. For those that missed it : http://www.thehubsa....rame-and-again/ I have had not one, not two but three frame failures on GT 29er bicycles in the last 18 months. After the last one Omnico is refusing to provide me with a replacement frame or refund me the R4000 I paid a year ago to upgrade from a cracked Karakoram to a Zaskar frame. Is there anything I can do other than make sure as many people possible know about this ? -------------------------------- EDIT : This story has a good end : https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/140906-omnico-and-my-3rd-gt-frame/page__st__48#entry2350479 Thank you Omnico
  15. Hi all, A bianchi road bike frame was bought around this time last year through an authorised dealer. This weekend at a race, the hanger supplied with the new frame snapped and the result was that the derailler smashed through the rear seat stay of the carbon frame. Luckily the frame was insured and they are sorting it out. My local dealer told me that the frame will not be replaced under warranty because hangers are working parts and they fail from time to time. If the hanger is a year old and came with the frame, is this the correct interpretation? Surely the manufacturer should be held liable? Just curious, no shaming or flaming planned at all. The bike is owned by a chilled out 60 year old lady that just loves cycling, she is no big racer and rides very slowly (well she climbs rather well but descends like a grandma)
  16. Hi Guys Not sure if this has been discussed before, couldn't find a similar topic despite searching. Anyway this is sort of a rant, not at any bike shop in particular, but more with the system I guess or the CPA. So I bought a KS dropper post and now it's defective, so it's within warranty and I want to return it for repair/replacement etc. Now apparently I have to pay the courier cost to return it to the online shop/supplier. This doesn't really seem fair to me, they should pay for it since it is a defect and in essence the problem has been caused by them. (But I did read online that apparently according to the CPA and ECT act that it is my responsibility to pay for the return). I dunno if anyone has any experience with this or 2c to share on this matter. Cheers Nick
