  2. With all the attacks and attempted bikejackings along the cycle lane in Cape Town, predominantly by the Woodstock area, I'm rather not willing to risk it - are cycles allowed through the harbour area? I've heard from some that they don't allow it? Otherwise what are the other options of cycling out of town - the highway??
  3. Dear fellow cyclists, Please be warned: I was attacked by two pedestrians on Monday 14 September, and robbed of all my belongings, except my bicycles and clothes. I just came from Paardeneiland and went uphill towards Woodstock Myciti station on the much loved and quiet cycle lane. Two pedestrians were walking behind each other on the cycle path towards me. As I past the first, he said something to the second. This one lashed out and hooked my right arm, causing my handle bar to twist and me to fall hard instantly. I tried to get up, but they ran to me and threatened me with some sort of plastic or iron rod. They tried to get my backpack off, but as I was wearing a helmet, this was not easy. They yanked and pulled hard, until my helmet came off. They ran off with bag and wallet into the field between Myciti route and N1. Please share this story with more cyclists riding alone, as this clearly is not safe any longer. I will now look for a group to commute with, as I know there are a few that do this for their safety. Let me know if you need more information. Ard.
  4. Dear members, In 2006, during the Velo Mondial conference, the City of Cape Town adopted a Declaration, the aim of which was to ensure that the CoCT facilitated the following tasks: Reclaiming public space so as to improve quality of life Improving the integration of cycling with other sectors such as: health, public transport, environment, and economic generation Facilitating greater access to high-quality technical expertise on cycling Ensuring political commitment for an increased role for NMT in economic and community development Planning to retain and encourage the small scale and mixed function of community districts and make these as accessible as possible to the bicycle Building the capacity of community-based organisations and supporting NGOs in order to promote NMT Engaging the business community in providing healthy workplaces Attached please find the program for the follow up workshop. The workshop will be held at the FNB Conference venue 28th floor, FNB Portside building c/o Hans Strijdom Ave & Buitengracht Street Please rsvp to Marianne.vanderschuren@uct.ac.za if you are interested to attend.
