  1. Good morning all in Hubland, Reading through some recent threads, it seems that a few cyclists get very upset with "wheel suckers", people who effectively trail behind a cyclist ahead of him/her in a race situation. Now, when you are riding/racing in the more intense batches (vets, A, B etc.), riders have different goals. More often than not, one just wants to finish with the bunch as an example. The only way to do that is to either suck wheel, or to be so powerful that you drag the bunch from start to finish. I'd like to say that this split is 80/20 in favour of the "wheel suckers". What I anticipate the biggest gripe to be are the "wheels suckers" taking advantage near the end of the race, sprinting by and taking the win. Why are people so upset by this? Why do you think that if you lead the race from start to finish you deserve the podium spot? Kudos to you if you are capable of that, but that also makes you a target for subsequent races, because then people know who to "suck dry". What if you as a "wheel sucker" are feeling surprisingly good nearing the end and feel like you can take the win? Should you out of principle stay where you were? Example: Peter Sagan won the 2015 WC by sitting in the bunch until the few kilometers and going solo until the end. Yes, his forte is sprinting, so he wants to take maximum advantage. What do other people think? PS! This is just my opinion, no need to slam mine.

  3. So having taken road cycling a bit more seriously recently and having purchased a road bike I have come across a mental block/problem. I cannot seem to get comfortable with speed on my road bike compared to my mtb. I am quite comfortable doing 60km/h down a track, but come to doing the same on the road and my brain goes NOPE, and I slow down. To confuse the situation even more, if I hit the same road hill on my mtb I am more than happy to get the speed up and find myself pedaling my legs off trying to get more out the bike. Begs the question, why don't I trust my road bike?
  4. Hello fellow mountain bikers. I have read though many, MANY threads regarding mountain bike tyres, yet I am just as confused as before. In fact, I am probably more confused than ever before. What I have concluded is that its 50% preference, and 50% required riding type (terrain). With having said that, I am in search of advice for selecting the most appropriate tyres for me specifically. I live in Cape Town, and I ride mostly single track. I am 25, and weigh approximately 75kg (185cm tall). I am not a pro (no duh...), but I like to think I go pretty quickly down the single tracks, although I only started riding last year November. I ride a Large 2014 Giant Trance 02, which has a 650B 27.5" wheel-set. PLEASE NOTE: I am looking for Maxxis tyre options and combinations ONLY! If you are going to contribute to this thread, please comment with a combination of both front AND rear tyre options, rather than saying things like "aah, why Maxxis?", or "Continental is much better!" etc etc etc. I have used Continental's on my previous bike, and I am wanting to try out Maxxis tyres in particular, so please just accept that, and give me constructive advice... If any. Thank you in advance to those who find the time to give me genuine options and combinations Here is a photo of my exact bike below:
  5. As most people around here will know from some comments I have made over the last few months, my sister started riding around October last year. To me, she doesn't really appear to be getting fitter or faster. I know that part of her issue is she doesn't really understand what I am explaining about gearing the bike, and I don't know how else to explain it to her. Off road she averages about 10km/h and on the road its about 15km/h, but she constantly wants to stop because she says her legs are burning. Last Sunday we did 28km on the road and by the end she wanted to throw up and cry. I found some exercises for off the bike to help build the legs but they don't appear to be helping too much. She rode a few times while I was out with a broken clavicle with some friends, but, since I have been back on the bike (around the middle of March) she rides with me 3 times a week (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday so it isn't consecutive days on the bike). She has entered the 947 cycle challenge, so I need to find a way to get her ride that distance by November. So, to my questions: 1.Am I expecting too much too soon? 2.Does anyone have recommendations on how to build her fitness levels? (Personally I think she just needs time in the saddle and to stop whining, but that approach is clearly not working ) 3.How do I explain the gearing (3x9) - maybe a video?
  6. Hi Any advice on where is best to buy garmin products in PE? I am looking for speed and cadence sensor. -Paul
