Hey Guys

I am looking at getting some goggles for DH.

So far I have looked on chain reaction cycles. I was told I should try and get Oakleys as I will be able to get the replacement lenses quite easily. Anyway the options available in my price range are the Oakly O frame, Proven, Proven otg and L frames. I was wondering if anyone has used any of these and what you thought of them. I have a bel helmet. Not sure how that compares to others with respect to the goggles fitting properly.

I read somewhere on the hub there is no import duties on goggles, have any of you guys imported a set befor and know if this is true?

Anyway thanks in advance for the advice.

hey there!

I've also heard that there is no duty (only the 15.4% VAT) on goggles form CRC, but I haven't got any first hand experience there.

As for the goggles... I was running Thor Enemies (cheapies... cost me R250) up until march. I decided to replace them as they fogged up really easily (a common issue with goggles used on bicycles as one's body runs hotter than on a motorbike and ventilation is poor due to less airflow related to speed)...

So I went an alternate route and got myself some of these:

Von Zipper Bushwicks. (R700 with 2 lenses. R70 for a replacement lens... it was on special)

Sure they look like regular MX goggles... but they're actually not MX goggles at all. They're snow goggles...

The difference lies in the lenses...

As seen above, snow goggles run a dual lens with venting in the lens itself. This reduces the chance of the goggles fogging up. I've been very pleased with the result.

In fact a buddy of mine that's an avid enduro motorbike rider (and happens to own a paintball arena) switched all the lenses in his paintball masks to double lenses to stop fogging (he offers night games), and when I showed him double lens "riding" goggles and that they have the same effect, he was very impressed, as he's had fogging issues in certain slow and technical stages of 'The Roof'.

So I know this doesn't help you in your choice bewteen different Oakley models (although they do have snow models/lenses too)... it's just something to consider if fogging up is an issue you've encountered.

rather just go and buy goggles from your local bike shop (if they stock some) or go to your local MX shop and get from them. Then you are gauranteed that you can get replacememtn lenses etc. The Von Zippers are cool - I ride with Oakleys and they comfy enough!

You will generally pay about 300 bucks for a set of oakleys at an mx shop.

I wouldnt waste my time getting off Chain Reaction as if you do get shafted with import you then pay vat, import AND Transport! - may as well buy from here - it would probably end up being cheaper!

In the end I got some No fear goggles of CRC for R200 and bought a dual vented lense for R100. No import duties charged luckilly. I have used them for one ride and they seemed to work well. I guess ill wait and see how well they last.

Can you get lenses? That's the problem when you buy goggles.

I can get lenses of CRC, I already have one spare.

The shops I popped into in cape town all said they stocked lenses for the goggles but did not have any in stock at the time. They also mentioned they were struggeling to get the oakley goggles and lenses from the supplier so I desceded against that option. It will probably take the same time to get the stuff shipped in that to wait for the local shops to get stuff in stock that they dont normally store.
