Stumjumper FSR or EPIC

Hi There

 

Both Carbon Expert 29er's, how do they compare. More specifically, how much slower would the stumpy be in a general Half marathon like the Van Gaalen, Voriberg, Baabas etc. I'm leaning towards the stumpy but a sales person told me an Epic is a lot faster, does that mean the stumpy is a dog in XC marathon type racing?

Hi

Don't have an epic , so cannot really comment on the epic , but I have a Scott spark (which is also a more xc race bike ) and an s-works stumpy ( 26 " ). Although the Stumpy is no dead horse , I would recommend it more for trail riding . It is a fantastic bike for the right type of conditions , and my favourite bike . But when I do a race or training ride with more dirtroad , I choose the spark . I think you will have to decide what type of riding you do most ,( xc races on open roads - epic , trail rides - stumpy ) and choose your bike acordingly . Hope that helps , 'cause they are both excellent bikes .

I was hoping you are going to say, 2 mins slower over 2 hours which would solve the problem.

I have got a 26 Stumpjumper, great trail bike but on faster district roads it is a bit of a slouch. If you are looking for a MTB for Marathon racing, I would not recommend the Stumpjumper.

I can't comment on the 29 ers but have ridden 26inch Stumpy and own an 26-Epic

 

They really are very different bikes (more so than the stats would suggest). I could never get comfy on the stumpy - always felt too upright and on steep inclines the front wheel would lift. Could not seem to get the power down properly.

The Epic has more of a natural cyclists feel to it .... A bit lower over the bars and subsequently easier to ride for longer.

I believe epic is definitely faster - even on the single track

 

Try ride them both .... You will see the difference after 5 minutes.
