Durban's plans for dedicated cycling lanes

 

Durban municipality hopes that about 40km of cycling lanes being installed throughout the city and surrounding townships will change the face of local transport.

 

The dedicated lanes in the Point precinct.

 

The lanes cover many of Durban's entertainment 'hot spots', such as uShaka Marine World, and are port of a transport transformation plan.

 

Cycle lanes are also being planned for parts of uMlazi and KwaMashu.

 

To date, R40million has been spent on the lanes, with German bank KSW donating R10m after an agreement with the Department of Environmental Affairs during the COP17 summit, said Caroles Esteves, deputy head of road system management.

 

Esteves assured motorists that the new lanes would not inconvenience them in any way.

 

"We are widening the roads by 5m to accommodate both cyclists and motorists. The new lanes won't encroach on existing vehicle lanes," he said.

 

So far, about 6.5km of lanes have been built, of the approximately 40km that should be ready by August, Esteves said.
