Thanks everyone for your comments. I think the writing is on the wall that he should start with a shorter race. I'm scanning through the races and putting reminders in my calendar for when entries open.

So far there are a few that looks promising:

  • Berg&Bush (I thought entries was closed already)
  • ToHellandBack
  • 3Mountains (they have a special youth stage race with more realistic distances for 16 - 18 year olds)
  • Ride2Nowhere (also has a youth stage for 16+)
  • 3Towers (Mnacane - youth stage for 16 - 18)

It's always easier making decisions when you have all the facts.

Thanks Stretch - that was interesting. I have also been told to watch for his development and growth and for him not to push it too hard. He's already doing rather long marathons (has been for the past year and he's only turning 17 tomorrow) and I've been told to watch that as well.

I have been told that one of the reasons for the age restriction is not a case of ability but rather a case of the effects that stage races have on bone development or something like that - as the ages between 15 and 20 are when a lot of growth happens...I also understand it is more crucial in females than in males.. would be interested if someone knows the full story

edit: quick google brought me to this http://www.brianmac.co.uk/children.htm
