MEDIA RELEASE:

Fat bikes go wild on the beaches

Ride Wild cc, organisers of the original mountain bike stage race in South Africa, namely the Imana Wild Ride, are excited to announce the launch of their brand new event ‘The Fat Beach Ride’, exclusively created for Fat Bikes.

What is a ‘fat bike’?

Definition Fatbike

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A fatbike also named wide tire bike is a bicycle with over-sized tires, typically 3.8 in (9.7 cm) or larger and rims 65 mm (2.6 in) or wider, that are designed for riding on soft unstable terrain such as snow and sand.[1] These bikes are built around frames with wide forks and stays to accommodate the wide rims required to fit these tires. These wide tires can be used with inflation pressures as low as 5 psi (340 hPa) to allow for a smooth ride over rough obstacles. A rating of 8–10 psi (550–690 hPa) is suitable for the majority of riders. [2]

So, fat bikes are ideally suited to sand and snow conditions. The wild coast of South Africa boasts some of the most pristine and unspoilt beaches anywhere on the world. Perfect for beach riding. This year, The Imana Wild Ride celebrates sixteen years of racing the tide along the stretch of coast between The Great Kei River and Umngazi Rivers, some two hundred kilometres of the most breath taking scenery and unique riding any mountain biker dreams of. And now - it just got better, introducing ‘The Fat Beach Ride’….

THE ROUTE

Starts and finishes from Morgan Bay Hotel, 80km north of East London. The ride comprises four days, incorporating the most ideal section of beach riding between The Great Kei River, to overnight one at Kob Inn, then on to The Haven for overnight two before returning to Kob Inn on night three and home to Morgan Bay on the fourth day. Daily distances range between 40-45km which may not sound too challenging but don’t be fooled!

THE CONCEPT

The event is limited to twenty-five two man teams. It is not about the racing, except for racing the tide. It is small, exclusive and unique. It is all about having fun and riding fat bikes in their native environment. There will be some exciting surprises during the event, to be revealed to those daring souls who take on this inaugural adventure.

WHEN and HOW

The dates have been set for Sunday 27th September (arrive in Morgan Bay) to start the ride on Monday morning and return to base on Thursday 1st October.

Entries are limited to twenty-five teams of two and will open on Monday 1st June. First come, first serve.

The entry fee is all inclusive of five hotel nights and all meals between arrival dinner on the Sunday to departure breakfast on the Friday morning, as well as full back-up services, amazing handouts and the experience of a lifetime !

Participants may either fly into East London and catch a transfer to Morgan Bay or drive directly to Morgan Bay. Vehicles will be securely parked during the event at Morgan Bay.

THE COMMUNITY FOOTPRINT

In keeping with the legacy of the Imana Wild Ride, The Fat Beach Ride will generate funds for the Wild Ride Education Company (WREC) which assists local communities with providing classrooms and educational facilities along the coastline. Over the past decade, WREC has proudly built twenty-eight classrooms and raised over two million Rands in an attempt to make a difference to the impoverished communities through which the event passes. Participants in the inaugural Fat Beach Ride will be contributing a percentage of their entry fees to WREC in support of this worthy cause.

#ENDS.
