@Andymann: Thanks for the info but I think the carbon is going to be a tad outside my price range.

I have bought the Mongoose frame for R1500 and awaiting delivery. Thank you everyone for the feedback and advice. Ill keep the zaskar frame just in case I can get it repaired as a backup but will keep in mind that it wont last.

It is very common for cracks to form close to repair welds. This normally happens because the original crack happened due to fatigue and the material in the same area has exactly same fatigue problem. I.e. the weld is now stronger but the material next to it is fatigued and it invariable then it breaks right next to the weld. In some alloys this problem can be resolved with heat treatment.

The other reason why it normally happens is because welding effects the alloys crystal structure in the vicinity of the weld, normally weakening it. This is especially true for many aluminum alloys. Best to check whether your frame material is suitable for welding.

Don't want to hijack your thread but talking of repairs, ... I asked a cycle shop this question in the week.

I love steel, in the market for a frame and want to stay Alu, but ...

Can Alu and Carbon be repaired if as a result of an accident? The questions kinda took into account if its a warranty issue then the manufacturer should (hopefully) replace. Their answer was Carbon is must easier to repair and thus more reliable while Alu is difficult to impossible.

Whats your thoughts.

They were quick to also add "Both frame repairs will never be the same after"
