and can anyone explain the benefits of a 1x11 system to me? from the figures I have managed to gather. it isn't really any lighter than a 2x10 and you don't really have the same range of gears anyway?

I’ve changed from a SRAM XO 2x10 drivetrain to a Shimano XT 1x11 at the beginning of this year and I will never change back to a 2x setup.  Only reason I did not go for the SRAM option is because of my budget.  Obviously you do not have the same gear ratio but with a 11-42 cassette and a 32 oval chanring I am able to climb any hill and the only time I spin out is when I am on the tar road which is no place for the MTB anyway.

If you have never cursed at your front derailleur you will not appreciate the simplicity of the 1x setup as much.  I have done more than my fair bit of cursing at the f@#&%$ front derailleur, especially during last years W2W Adventure.  That was the final straw and I got the 1x setup.  Best upgrade/replacement I have ever done on my bike.

No gear range or minor weight save makes up for the simplicity of the 1x setup.  But this is only my opinion…….

I've only ever cursed at the lower end Deore front derailleur I had on my ye olde Avalanche MTB back from 07. However both the SLX on my old Zaskar and the XT on my current Merida have never dropped a beat and vary really a chain. I guess from my point of view I am struggling to see the benefits of a 1x. And I often find myself using my big gears in a descent. I like to pedal the downs.

On the road bike. I can get a pair of brand new out the box, Easton EA90SLX's laced to Novatec hubs at 3.5K. YAY or NAY?

I decided to nay the Eastons, lots of talk about broken spokes. I'll have to keep an eye out. But I really like the AC Argent. They look nice.

How deep do you need to go to start getting benefits from Aero? At 30mm deep I really like the Argents.

but what else is out there? Anything deeper is either carbon or heavier than what I got already, or so it seems.
