Thanks guys - very much appreciated. Looks like I will become quite familiar with the N6 then. Will probably leave my car outside Virgin Active Beacon Bay and then ride from there up the N6. Looking at the maps, I could then probably also do some loops through Nahoon, Beaconhurst, Bonza Bay etc.

Is the R72 any good for cycling from say after the airport? I see the R346 running out to Chalumna makes a neat loop too.

Hogsback is on my MTB list too. Will see if I get there.

For the last couple December holidays, we've been at Kayser's Beach, about 30km south of ELS airport along the R72 and depending which way the wind is blowing, i've either ridden to ELS and back or head the other direction towards Port Alfred, usually 40-50km out and then turn around. Last year there were roadworks around the Keiskamma River area and climbing up after the river wasn't much fun with very narrow roads and trucks, so the river became the turnaround spot.

I found the R72 wasn't bad to ride on as it's a fairly wide road, with a slight shoulder and a full shoulder in some places.

The tar is quite rough, so make sure all the fillings are secure :D

Thank you very much for that typhoon… I did remember some of those wide shoulders, which is why I was asking specifically about it. I may yet get out there but in truth the N6 is closer for me and, according to the locals on this thread, safer. But I will suss it all out when I am down there  next week.
