Kwilliam Posted June 5, 2019 Share Hi all I have a Dura Ace 7850 front wheel thats hub is not smooth. Bike shop says the cup is pitted. Apparently spares are unavailable. Any suggestions on alternate replacement parts / repairs? Replacing the entire hub will be uneconomical. Regds Keith
Weimaraner1 Posted June 6, 2019 Share The cup is an integral part of the hub - this is why it is so important to service hubs regularly and for that matter your headset as well. Once the "inside cup" is pitted or damaged it cannot be repaired, you have to change the hub. You can try and alleviate the problem by trying to clean out the cup as best you can with steelwool or 3M pads. New bearings, cone and grease is the best you can do - maybe it is a little less rough for a while but the only permanent fix is a new hub and you are right - hub+rebuilt wheel is expensive but a new wheelset of the same quality will be more expensive. Second hand is an option but you must make sure that you are not buying another person's troubles.
David Marshall Posted June 6, 2019 Share That is the unfortunate thing with cup and cone bearings. Technically great - maintenance wise if you skip a beat you loose the cone - two beats and the cup is gone. My advice is scrap the wheel. They are not supported locally - cones, spokes etc.
