Gauteng to KZN road routes

Road bike groups or individuals may start 50 km out of Jhb to get to KZN to avoid hazardous intersections and general traffic. Mtb has the convenience of starting from your own front door as the option of riding on poor road surfaces or gravel/grass shoulders or dirt is available. To minimise loading and unloading bikes onto vehicles, routes where daily stages are not too far and where any undesireable current local conditions can be avoided are what I am looking for. Unsupported solo riding would be the extreme case that I am mainly interested in.
