Trek xcaliber 8

Hi All 

Im new to cycling and would  like to purchase my first bike and leaning towards the Trek xcaliber 8 (my Budget)  Most of my rides is on road and  will eventually  more over to XC type of riding.  Would this  bike be  ok for  oh say the Karoo to Coast?  Take into consideration the budget.

If you want to go new, it’s pretty much as good as you’ll get, but also have a look at Giant, Signal and Titan, some good options as well.

Personally would go second hand, much better value, pay 20% less and use the savings for upgrades or repairs if necessary.

Depending on location I don’t mind helping with choosing/setting up and vetting the bike if you do go 2nd hand.
