I tried getting answers on Polar's website and came across a number of other people with the same problem. (See copied bit below). Anyone on the Hub have an answer for this problem?

Problem setting altitude on S710

I recently changed the battery on my S710. All went well except that I can't seem to reset the altitude on the watch to any value other than between 2290 ft and 2385 ft. I live at 420 ft.

Suggestions anyone?

Thankshttp://forum.polar.fi/images/smilies/confused.gif

I've got the same problem with my 720i. I can only use values between -2988m and 122m . I live at 300m. Polar shows now allways -488m. I don't know what to do nowhttp://forum.polar.fi/images/smilies/frown.gif

Same for me
S720i

Altitude always reads at -488m even after resetting to 100m

I fixed mine !!

I may have the answerhttp://forum.polar.fi/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I did a battery change on my S710 and got altitude just over 2200 feet, I live at about 850 feet. Sounds like the same problem.

I fixed it !!! by pressing the little reset button on the right side between the up and down arrows. At first the display went to what must be a test pattern and was pretty sure I had just distroyed the watch. But when I pressed the Start button (or was it the stop button?) the diplay went to time. I did have to reset the time and date; but the altitude is back around 850.

ps. I also tried the two reset buttons on the back first and nothing happened. Anybody know what those do.

I have exactly the same problem, mine's reading at -488m to 122m and also on top of that I have a temp reading of 60 degrees.

quote from bobandpenny "ps. I also tried the two reset buttons on the back first and nothing happened. Anybody know what those do."

bob, those two buttons on the back are the temperature sensors I think.

Any help to fix this ? Please...

I have set my S710 to 0m.

Remember the polar calculate an altitude with an air pressure and temperature measurement.  So it is only an approximation.  If you do the same circuit over and over but the temperature changes (early morning to mid day you will see a drift in altitude.  So what may be the case is that for a certain temperature and pressure it will have a range of altitude, which it limits you to, that is possible. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Polar Service center is in Kayalami.  Phone them or make an appointment and they will check it while you wait.

Hi Ox_Wagon,

Thank you, I tried resetting to the actual altitude as well as zero, but then as soon as I start an exercise on the Polar it resets to -(minus)488m and a temp of 60 degrees! I don't think the problem lies with barometric variances, rather I think I've messed up something with the battery change process.

If I don't come right I'll try to get it to the Polar.

They will most probaly just do a factory reset.

My old s710 is at the end of its live and it is stuck on the maxsimum elevation and does not show any altitude varation.  I spoke to them and they basicly said that if a factory reset can't sort it they would have to replace the PC board.  It is a bit expencive but still cheaper than a new watch.

Morning Ox_Wagon,

Seems I've run out of options with regards to a diy repair Cry

So a trip to Polar Service Centre is on the cards, I'll just call first to get an idea of timeframe and cost, 'cause maybe a non-altitude ride will have to do for a while.

Happy trails
