A friendly warning to cyclists that travel to events by plane.

I have just returned from an event in Europe. I did insure my bike but did not insure my luggage. Needless to say my bag never left Europe and trying to work with the airlines to trace lost baggage is like sticking needles in your eyes. I calculated an inventory of the contents and with race shoes, wetsuit, glasses etc etc etc it quickly added up to roughly R40k. The bottom line is you can claim a max of about R12,500 (still some funny rules that apply here). Luckily I had extra travel insurance through Visa which covers me for about another $3000 but if you did not take this out you would be a poor man/ or woman. (I might not be able to lodge a full claim as the insurers want proof of ownership - I am sure some of us don't keep the till slip for a pair of cycling shoes (R2,800.00) or a tri wetsuit (R4,500), or even a tri suit (R1,400), or a pair of Assos shorts (R2,500) and the list grows quickly)

I have learned my lesson the expensive way so the moral of the story is to take an inventory of your kit before you travel and privately insure and specify all items. It may seem like an amateur mistake but I am sure many of us take travel for granted.

Thanks Lufthansa for loosing my bag

I assume MTN paid for it.  Hardly seems fair to expect a company (if you can call SAA that) to cover additional costs for no benefit.
