K2C you just have to survive the first 5 Kays Wapad and then the last short steep climb at about 90K's, the rest should be a breeze. Have ridden my SS 9er only once since I got it last week...was flippen hard climbing in Eden...do you get used to it and does it get easier riding steep areas without gears?

You get used to it in a while, the good thing about single speed is that you force yourself to recover on the flats, so then when the next hill looms you are ready for it.

But read this article:

This guy is really talking the truth about single speed, I have also found that my times on long routes are very much the same whether I am riding single speed or geared.

According to my polar my single speed rides burns only about 10% more calories than my geared ride, and I think that is because my single speed is 1.5-2kg heavier than my geared hardtail.
