  1. I think it is more related to the type of trainer you use. If you have a bluetooth/ant power trainer like tacx or cycleops, I would recommend Zwift (works with android phone) if you want to get some realtime training in an environment that is not too boring. I have used EVERYTHING from trainerroad, virtual trainer from cycleops to zwift. They are all good but for different reasons. All have the option of structured workouts but only zwift has the ability to train with buddies on the other side of the world in a realtime virtual environment. You will find that you get bored with one of the mentioned apps after a month and then move on to another one the next month. All of them will cost you between 120-160 rands a month. Just be sure to put off the autorenewal. I had this feature on when i used trainer road and stopped using it for a few months not knowing I was still enrolled. They were very helpfull and actually refunded me for the months that I did not log on to the app. I can recommend tainerroad if you want very good structured training programs. It doesnt need a powert trainer. You can use it just with heart rate of persieved index. Real good program with lost of options. Trainer road, virtual trainer and zwift has a free trail. So try all of them before you commit. Hope this helps. Good luck in the cave!
  2. Hi Everyone! Back from the hell! Managed everthing on the 34x20 even heartbrake hill. Slashed front tyre on the first day but luckily managed with the tube. This was a harsh ride with high tyre pressure on the rigid fork! Day 2 was fantastic with new tyre on and a lot of climbing. Managed to do 3:15 on day2. Amazing ride! Fantastic organising by Wikus and his team. Lekker camping, beers, entertainment and great food in the hell! I can really recommend this ride. Met two other Single Speeders from Sedgefield: Ben and Christo. Hardcore guys. They did Baviaans on SS! Nice meeting you guys!
  3. Thanx everyone! My buddies says heartbreakhill coming back out of Gamkaskloof is probably the worst part. Will keep you posted!
  4. This is my first Hell and Back, but I've riden up swartbergpas on a geared bike before. Mostly riding single speed currently. I just want to avoid walking. I thought to maybe ride day 1 34x20 and day 2 32x20, if I struggle too much on day 1. Thanks.
  5. Hi Single speeders! Planning on riding the Hell and Back this weekend on my Niner Sir SS. I am a little bit unsure about what gear to use. I am planning to ride a 34x20. I am light fairly fit. My other choice could be 32x20. I dont have a sprocket larger than 20. Any tips and suggestions will be truly appreciated. Thanks. Anyone else going to do this event on a SS?
  6. Mountain biking is an expensive sport. You pay for technology and high quality specs wether this is dished up by specialized, cannondale, scott or whatever other brand. Servicing is where the bike shop and component makers make their money . Thus if you dont want to spend much on servicing ride n hardtail with a simple fork that is serviceable by your local bike shop or ride a single speed rigid fork bike or only ride road bikes. Just remember that the enjoyment of mountainbiking lies in riding any good bike with good company in lovely surroundings. Because as you can see, even the nicest bike with the greatest specs becomes just a bike after a year. Buy the best bike of brand of your choice that you can afford and then stick with it and keep on enjoying it for years. Thats my opinion. But i am riding a single speed.
