In my opinion, Alberton is the place to be for all things cycling if you live down south. There's good stuff happening in other places as well, but it can be a mission to get around at times, especially considering the traffic. I'm living in Jeppestown, which is pretty central, and it takes less than 15 minutes to get down to The Cycle Hub in Alberton, and the owners maintain some really good trails in the area.
