This can be done using a RFID tagging system similar to how warehouses manage their stock. Item can be scanned and have their info attached to said RFID tags (these are similar to stickers or can go even smaller. the application is on mobile and info is submitted to a cloud based server. Our company recently invested in this solution for our Gym Equipment around the country. the hardware solution was provided for by a company called Tractec. http://tractec.co.za/
