  20. Hey guys, We are supporting CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation SA) at this years Van Gaalens race. A new addition to the gang, the CHOC ‘cows’ will be bringing up the rear as sweep riders. These sweep riders are CHOC volunteers who will ride behind the last riders of the 10 km and 20 km races to ensure that all riders make it home safely. The ‘Rent a Cow’ initiative is available for parents who want to ride the 40 or 70 km race and require supervision for their children taking part in the 10 or 20 km race. The ‘Rent a Cow’ herd will consist of about 10 CHOC volunteers and rental will cost approximately R150. WHAT IS CHOC? CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA plays a key role in providing care for children diagnosed with cancer across South Africa. It is a country wide organization that provides the highest level of care required to treat childhood cancer in keeping with the latest developments world-wide. THE COWS Each year a herd of people sign up to ride the raise funds and ride the 94.7 Cycle Race. Last year we raised R3.6million which is being used to upgrade the treatment facilities at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital. The R3.4million raised in 2010 has been used to upgrade the facilities at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and the ‘roof wetting’ party celebrating the completion of this is scheduled for early November. Funds raised this year will go toward the purchase of a CHOC House in the Eastern Cape as well as towards paediatric cancer research in South Africa under the auspices of the Zach Foundation – this is a non-profit organisation whose aim is to financially assist oncologists in researching a cure for children’s cancers, however, the assistance is not limited to research alone but will encompass any assistance that can be rendered by the resources at the foundation’s disposal, in aiding families in their struggle against this dreaded disease. Funds will also be used to improve childhood cancer awareness. Statistics show that if childhood cancer is diagnosed early enough and treated correctly, the majority of children (about 70%) can be cured. Currently only 50% of children are diagnosed and reach a treatment centre in time. This translates into at least 600 children in South Africa dying each year from cancer who could survive if they were diagnosed and treated early enough. With 2012 marking our fifth stampede, The Cows feel strongly the need to address the most pressing issues facing CHOC and the Paediatric Oncologists across South Africa which undoubtedly is the improvement in the survival rate of children diagnosed with cancer. I’m part of the Cows to help make a difference to help raising funds for Choc. Regards Gerhard Myburgh 083-235-9642
