  1. Will do. I am hoping to ride it on Race to the Sun. I was contemplating selling my entry because I am way out of shape now - still trying to fully get over some flu that I have had for a few weeks and my fitness has dropped off badly. But my cycling partner – who is not in much better shape – feels quite strongly that we must "give it a try" and even if we end up on the sweeper truck after 100 km, well that's okay – at least we will have tried. And there is a next year anyway. One of the challenges I had here is that the frame is an extra-large and on a road bike I normally ride a 56 cm frame while on a mountain bike a large frame is usually right (although sometimes I am on the edge between large and extra-large, depending upon the exact model of bike). So I had to ask Richard Baxter to first assess whether he would be able to set the bike up correctly for me. He seems to be chilled about it, so I decided to proceed with the project. But as you will have noted, I am trying at this point in time to do the absolute minimum necessary to "convert the bike" into a "road style". As I said earlier, if it all works out, then I might be prepared to spend a little bit more on the upgrades.
  2. I have for some time wanted a gravel bike but I also get to ride Eastern Cape farm roads from time to time and those who live out there will know that sometimes they are so bad that a normal gravel bike just won't cut it. So for some time now I have had in mind building a hybrid of some kind based upon a mountain bike base. Recently I managed to find myself a brand new old stock 2017 Trek Procaliber (same as in pic below) so have decided to see if I can turn this into some sort of hybrid kind of gravel type bike. The bike is full carbon and obviously already has RockShox on the front and has the Isospeed joint at the seat tube/top tube/seat stay joint. The bike also has the standard Shimano 2x10 SLX/XT drivetrain. So what we are going to do is put some drop bars on it, change the shifters to Tiagra 4700 hydraulic road shifters and change the rear derailleur to Tiagra RD 4700 GS. Then change the tyres to Panaracer Gravel King 45s. I think it should result in a fairly comfortable and usable gravel bike suited for "worse than normal" South African country roads. If it seems like it all is working out in terms of usability, then I may upgrade some of the components further. If it feels like it's not really working out, then I will simply reverse the upgrades and keep it as a carbon hard tail bike – at least until I get tired of it. :-) Will post updates later.
  3. Is there water in the bathrooms again now?
  4. What? "Sorry no results"?
  5. Thanks! Works great and is roughly in line with what I figured. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  6. Yes but you enjoy the sport and you are loved anyway… Welcome to the world of most of us! :-)
  7. The cut off was not hours but a particular time of day – 5 PM. See here: https://www.capetowncycletour.com/on-the-route/ So if you crossed the line before 5 PM, you should be okay. If you crossed it after 5 PM, it might be a problem. But also see the cut off times along the route at the above URL.
  8. Really greatly appreciated!
  9. I get very nearly the same result, whether I use minutes or seconds. 1.168564... What does it mean?
  10. I also don't get the formula or how to correctly apply it. When I apply it, I get a result of 1.1641111... Which doesn't quite make sense to me. How about running an example using a hypothetical race time so we can properly understand how to correctly apply it?
  11. So, a few months back a mate of mine was riding a fairly new carbon frame mountain bike, the brand of which will for the time being at least, remain unstated. This was at Northern Farms. Towards the end of the ride, we noted that one of his chainstays was cracked, nearly all the way through. He had noticed nothing. If we had kept riding a bit longer, it's quite conceivable that this thing might have given in altogether on a long fast downhill – with potentially disastrous consequences. It happens.
  12. Sho. Talk about hubris and condescension. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  13. One of the things I wondered about. I saw quite a few people pulling carts with disabled individuals in them. Must be quite a days work… One does wonder if making an exception for e-bikes for those specific instances is not justified? I suspect that if the race organisers were to permit this, far more disabled people would be taken along to enjoy the day as well. Even if there is a special seeding for them. Just a thought.
  14. That's actionable negligence. He was pushing through when it wasn't clear that he had sufficient safe space to do so. Very different to someone suddenly getting blown sideways. If I was one of those that went down and got seriously hurt, I would definitely sue that rider - and I would have a very high prospect of success too. Perhaps a few such cases will get people (the gung-ho crowd) to start paying proper attention to the "safety first" principle. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  15. For whom? For what age group? For what tyoe of build (assuming the guy is in good shape to start with)? Some folk run well, some swim well, some cycle well. Some can do all three well. Etc etc. Sub-4 is maybe the mean for the entrants in this race but its hardly like you can apply the mean of a race like this to individual circumstances. Eg, I'm way over the average age. If I don't do sub-4, am I seriously unfit? What about the 75 year old tannie? Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  16. My first CTCT today (I'm nearly 55 and bought my first bike in Feb 2018). Was apprehensive about the wind but had a great ride. Really enjoyed it. Went like the clappers (by my standards), especially from Smitties but even a bit before that. I felt the biggest issue was that I may have been seeded a bit far back (5B) - or the seeding is a stuff up, not sure which - and kept having to work my way through slower riders. Got a bit hairy at times. Especially on the flats, gentle inclines and downhills, I seemed to be going past a heck of a lot of people. Also couldn't find a pack to hook onto so was pretty much a solo ride for me. Ran out of puff halfway up Suikerbossie so stopped and downed the goodie bag Zest thing - that sure helped a lot. Must be one of the most beautiful routes anywhere in the world. Really looking forward to the next one. Clive from 5D who rode today after surviving pancreatic cancer and now has no pancreas, spleen or gall bladder: bloody well done and I wish you many more indeed. You're one of my heroes. Graeme from 5B with the red cyclocross bike with the masking taped bananas under the top tube: you're a real gentleman. I hope I see you again! To the US couple from Washington State on the tandem: hope to see you next year again. To the thirty Nigerians who flew here to join us, the same: next year same time, same place lads!
  17. Beautiful advice. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  18. Dead calm at 5am this morning. May pick up later though. Tomorrow's Winguru All models numbers are starting to look like a really good day. We're going to be riding folks! My first CTCT. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  19. Yep. I own more Treks than they had on display... Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  20. Goody bag. Bottle of dishwashibg liquid and a sachet of mayonnaise... Who would have imagined? [emoji23][emoji23] Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  21. Quite perceptive. You're absolutely correct. I have never ridden the Cape Peninsula at all… It sounds like I may be better off just staying safely in my hotel room and watching the fun on the television…
  22. I don't know about your Kaapse Doktor but I've done enough riding into E Cape (East London area) gale force winds. You work hard and go slooowly but I find the heat to be a far bigger killer. But yes, a light breeze is always better if one has a choice. The E Cape boys say "any wind is better than no wind" and I think they are mostly right. :-)
  23. I tell you what – I rather ride in the wind – even quite a strong one – and on a hot windless day. You work harder in the wind but somehow it doesn't feel nearly as bad.
