  1. Look at the Scott Spark 40. Similarly spec'd to the Silverback (lighter and better frame) and you might be able to pick one up for around R19,000 if you shop around. It also has the twinloc system that locks out both shocks with one handlebar mounted lever - works very well. http://www.scott-sports.com/us_en/product/10023/55381/217930
  2. Thanks Jason! Really amped to try it this year...
  3. What's happening with this race, are the entries open? The website seems to be down. Its happening in 2 months' time and still no details?
  4. Isn't there also a school of thought that suggests that the bigger the contact area between the shoe and pedal the more efficient energy is transferred? Thus, although road pedals are heavier, they have a much bigger contact area and are therefore more efficient. It does feel like you are part of your road bike once those pedals are clicked in, but that could due to the fact that the bike is much more rigid and responsive than a mtb.
  5. How much does pedal weight really matter? I know weight on anything that rotates. like rims, have have an exponential effect, but does the same logic apply to pedals? I got some cheap Shimano SPD's on my new Mtb (Scott Spark). The work very well, but probably weigh like half a kilo with the cleats. Is it worthwhile spending R600 on a pair of Look Quartz (other than the fact that they look cool). Don't know if this is the right thread to raise the question...
  6. I love going to the GHC once a year for the expo - it's part of the Argus experience. There's ample free parking and enough space for all the stalls. There's no difference once you're inside anyway - the quality of the exhibitors determine the success of the expo, not the venue. Why move it to the CTICC and effectively take a couple of hundred grand away from charities that the Cycle Tour Trust support?
  7. Definitely go one size up! I'll probably have to try and sell the one shirt on the Hub sometime. Quality seems pretty good, although I won't do the Transbaviaans in one these bibs...I found that the padding on the one set (Livestrong) differed from the padding on the other (Radioshack). As for Customs, my package (4 sets) slipped through, didn't even have to pay VAT (is it possible to track someone through this site ). I spoke to lady at Customs in Cape Town and she told me they do not have the manpower to check all parcels...so its luck of the draw. She also told me that I could do the honest thing and voluntarily pay the duties
  8. Thanks for the entry Steve, all the best for the Grape Escape!
  9. I placed a order in the beginning of Feb and got my stuff last week - not bad. They were also very responsive to my queries via email. You have to keep in mind that it was Chinese new year and whole country was drunk on rice wine from the 1st to the 7th of Feb
  10. I'm starting in F, but did 3:39 last year (in K), so I'd love to come close to 3 hours, but a sub 3 is probably a bit farfetched...
  11. So I completed my entry for the MTB Argus online, saved it (credit card was in the car, to lazy to fetch it) and forgot to pay the fee on the last day. Emailed them, but they flat out refuse to accept any form of late payment/entry for the 52km race - they do however for the shorter races. I'm sure it won't be a logistical nightmare to add a couple of late entries at the back of the field (its not like its the Epic!) Also, everyone who entered until the last day got an entry, so the limited entries are unlikely to be filled. I'll be the first to admit that it is my own fault, but surely it doesn't make sense to toss away extra revenue with minimal, if any, additional costs associated with it?
  12. Nie great nie, 2 pap wiele en net een spaar tube, so ek het heelwat tyd langs die pad spandeer. Iemand het darem later vir my 'n spaar tube gegee.
  14. Thanks guys, I think its fair to say that Gatorskins are the way to go. I suppose you get what you pay for!
  15. Hi guys I'm not really a roadie, but do own a road bike that I use for the Argus and some training rides. I've never replaced the tyres, but after 2 punctures in the 99er yesterday I think its time. Can anyone recommend descent tyres for around R200. I saw these on CWC: http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/serfas-seca-rs-folding-road-tyre Don't know the brand, but they seem fairly light for the price and claim to be puncture resistant.
  16. Howzit, anyone keen to do a ride tonight. The whole mountain's covered in clouds - should be nice to ride with lights on. Kloofnek Superette at 17:45? Cheers
  17. Hi Leo I'll meet you tomorrow at 17:30 at Kloofnek Superette. We can take it from there. Anyone else who wants to join in is welcome. Cheers
  18. I live in Tamboerskloof as well and will definitely join in for some midweek rides. I won't be able to make 5pm though, but could probably make 5:30. Let me know if you're riding next week.
  19. This is most probably a Chinese website - check out the grammar and prices. It is unlikely that anyone can sell a Mellow Johnny's shirt for $28, while the official site charges $110 (without it being a knock-off). Has anyone ordered from these guys yet - looks like a good deal, regardless of (probably) being knock-offs.
  20. City Cycles in Canal Walk sells Indola bibs.
  21. Try the Indola bibs - local brand, but great chamois. They retail for about R750. Don't know if it will fly with the image conscious roadies - but definitely better than the First Accent and Cape Storm offerings. Paul Cordes won the mixed category of the Epic in 2007 wearing these (according to the label).
  22. I had a look at the Blackburn's, but they're only 85 lumens, compared to 900 (quoted) of Magicshine. I've done some research and there's really nothing else that comes close at the price. City Cycles in Canal Walk sells them for R1550.
  23. I ordered these: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.29489. It will come to about R700 incl. VAT. Apparently these lights are quite good for the price - seems to be the light of choice for the Transbaviaans. I reckon Rhodes Memorial and back sounds pretty good.
  24. Howzit Muddy P, I ordered my light from Dealextreme yesterday, so hopefully I'll have it by the end of next week. It would be great if we could arrange a weekly ride, say 6:30 on Wednesday nights, departing from the parking lot at the top of Kloofnek? Hopefully there's a couple of other hubbers who wants to join us, so that we at least have a couple of people every week...
  25. Hi there Are there any hubbers doing group rides in Deer Park/Table Mountain after work on week nights. I have seen guys up there riding with lights after dark - not too keen riding alone though. I've been entered into the Transbaviaans and need as much time on the bike as possible - and get some experience in night riding very quickly!
