  1. Carbon frames do not need to have a direct mount front derailleur. Direct mount FD's are used when the rear suspension designs demands it. If anyone else has this problem, i solved it by looking at a bike in my local shop. Simply cut open a piece of cable housing and remove the inner tube, place that tube through the hole in the carbon and guide the cable through.
  2. Dear tech gurus, I have bought my first carbon MTB frame from a fellow hubber and am now in the process of swapping my groupset. All my previous frames made use of the top pull functionality for the front derailleur, now i am faced with installing my derailleur (which i believe is dual-pull) in the bottom pull fasion. My worry comes from the fact that the cable goes through the carbon frame and exits at an angle, would this not tend to eat away at the frame since this cable would be under tension most of the time? Or am i going about the installation wrong? Please refer to the pictures for better idea of the problem. Any help and advice would be appreciated. Regards, Franscois
  3. Thanks for the advice guys, think i'll leave the bike, i'm not a fan of riding in sand.
  4. Spending a week in Cape Vidal with my dad, brother and a few of their friends, mostly going for fishing. Anyone know if there are any good mountain biking trails within, say, a 20 km distance? I've never been there so i don't know much about the place. I'm the only one keen to ride so want to know if it would be worth while to take my bike along. Thanks Franscois
  5. Thanks guys! Do the lenses scratch easily? The frame seems like it is decent.
  6. I am interested in buying a set of these as they are pretty well priced. Only problem I have is that they don't come with any warranty according to the cycling-shop selling them. Have any of you hubbers used them? Are they decent quality? Thanks! javascript:popupWindow('http://www.solomonsonline.co.za/index.php?main_page=popup_image&pID=1265')
  7. My first solo build. Great learning experience!
  8. Sorry to dig up this old thread but does anyone know where I can buy some decent protective tape in Pta East? I have tried, Builders Warehouse, Waltons and Pick n Pay without any luck.
  9. This is why I love the Hub. You get solid advice, physical help and some humor in between. The frame is a Java espresso, the one that Kiwi sells, but i bought it from someone else who barely used it. The headset to go in it is a Ness headset, it's probably a cheapy. @ MissionS I will deffinitely PM you when I get the frame, thanks! and thanks to all the other guys for the advice so far.
  10. @missionS: I am in Pretoria East, thanks I might take you up on that deal if at first I don't succeed. @Johan: I will go buy a piece of pipe today, however I'm not going to go for any 6 minute record, if I damage my new frame I will cry for 6 days.
  11. I actually did a bit of reading on this, apparently some semi-integrated headsets require a press fit and some don't. It depends on the manufacturer. I guess I will wait until I receive it to see what i'm dealing with. These damn strikes are making delivery feel like a lifetime.
  12. Hi all I will be receiving a new frame next week that comes with a semi-integrated headset. I have never had to install one of these so I have no idea what I will have to do. I cant find a good video on YouTube about it so if anyone could guide me through I would greatly appreciate it. Also I don't have access to a press fit tool but I read somewhere it can be done with a piece of wood and a hammer? Thanks!
  13. Thinking of buying some parts from www.dealextreme.com. How many of you guys have had success? and how long did the delivery take?
  14. Hi Hubbers I know a few of the members on here ride,or have ridden, the Java Espresso frame. So my question is about the size of the frame, I am 1.75m but have quite long legs for my stature. I am very comfortable on my current frame which is a 17.5 inch and has an effective top tube length of 580mm The 18 inch Espresso frame has an effective top tube length of 563mm. So I am scared that this frame would be to small for me. I am hoping to get feedback from some guys who have ridden these frames, hopefully some of you are around my length and can give me some idea of how the frame feels. Thanks!
  15. Hi Hubbers I'm looking to upgrade some parts on my mountain bike; stem, handlebar, seat and post etc. As I am still a student I don't have much of a budget so i would like to know where the best shops are to buy in Gauteng, preferably in Pretoria. An online store similar to CRC would also work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
