On the Freedom Ride (2300km - extreme conditions), not one of us cleaned or replaced a chain. As far as I know no one suffered from chain suck, or any serious drivetrain issues. We would lube the chain in the morning, and then at lunch time if necessary. I used cooking oil once - lasted for 4 days (500km).
