When you include our import VAT calculation and the amount you credit card company charges to do currency conversions, it comes out around 17.5%, so I found that this method used to work on duty free goods with pretty good accuracy. Unfortunately, as of Tuesday, this comparison has become a bit more rough since the UK VAT has now gone up to 20%.
