I've partially dismantled the shifter assembly and discovered a flat electrical ribbon cable. It runs to a little panel on the side of the housing. I'd hoped to find a little battery compartment there, but found only the plug end of the cable. What is this? Edit: Hey, don't I feel like a right Mampara!!?? I just discovered that the brake levers can move inwards to ratchet the gear cables! Looks like the problem is solved. Still wondering about that cable, though... Shonver2007-11-18 14:40:39

Hi all I'm new here. I just bought a used road bike as I need to get into some regular exercise. The bike has Shimano SORA d?railleurs, brakes and shift/brake levers (sorry if I'm not using correct terminology). The problem is with the d?railleurs or, more correctly, the shift levers. Moving them does not cause the d?railleurs to move. At present the cables are not taught. But even if I pull on them, I can't seem to feel the effect of the movement of the shift levers. I must add that the last time I owned a bicycle the shift levers were separate from the brakes and were mounted on the diagonal bar of the frame. These ones that are part of a combo assembly have a very short range of movement, and I'm quite puzzled as to how they are meant to work. Any ideas on what I can do to get them functioning correctly?
