I am looking to convert to a 1 x chainring and when I look at the options they offer they want to know what offset i want ie 3mm ,6mm what are they referring to ? And what do i need to take into consideration?

I want to change from a 2x12 to a 1x12 chainring on my tt bike how do I work out what offset i need for the 1 x chainring currently running a sram red 50/37 setup tks
