The 2012 specialized camber 29er is coming out with Custom Alex Rims (entry level option). I cannot find any information about these Rims on the net. Please provide me with any feedback you may have, specifically looking for weight and durability info.
2700 seems to be the going rate for the 500 edge package that includes the hrm. Also consider the for forerunner 310xt if you want to use the device for other sports as well.
I use Specialized MTB shoes. They are a bit more expensive than the cheapest MTB shoes at Sportmans Warehouse, but so far I am very happy. I am new to cycling myself, but I think you will be fine if you go with any of the major brands.
