  1. That's great advice - I'll get in touch with him. Thanks
  2. Another possibility is Sciatica. Pressure/inflammation of the big sciatic nerve underneath your hip. Controls the back and outer part of your legs all the way down. I my case (years ago) it presented as weirdness, tightness and tingling in the calf and outer ankle.
  3. hello all I'm looking for some advice and ideas When starting this road cycling malarky, I bought a 2nd hand Battaglin for R3000. It has served me (till I upgraded), relatives and friends well, but is now worn out. The chain pops off the big ring under any real power, bearings are tired, etc. What should I do with her? There's no way I can replace the 9 speed campag drivetrain for sensible money. Is the only option a single-speed commuter conversion? Fetching blue and yellow painted, oval aluminium framework and bombproof wheels are already present. In which case, any ideas about money in vs the final value of the machine. I'll post some pics of the machine a bit later.

Great bike to start with. Just don't be cheap with the tyres - shiddy / old and cracking tyres cost you more in tubes/bombs and inconvenient flats than decent tyres.

  6. The malmesbury - stellenbosch section really was a mess. To be honest, I think it would have been stressful just due to the wind. Adding in tired 109km riders with no idea that they are being borne down upon by a barely-hanging-together bunch of guttering, grumpy 170km riders just made it a mess. In less windy conditions, the overtaking would have been much simpler. A similar story was the overtaking of the slower teams by the seeded bunches. It wasn't a big issue as it was early in the race and conditions were nice - but still meant that a peloton had to overtake a 2 person wide team. Might future editions of the race move the slower teams to an appropriate start point with regard to the team members' seeding? On a side note: anyone know a good person to have a look at the lekker scar on a carbon rim that I got avoiding some plonker who meandered into the road after a waterpoint as 100 members of E-F bunch came past?
  7. I broke a rear wheel spoke (hit a railway line hard) on my DH 50mm clinchers, got it replaced, but then broke 2 more spokes on that wheel - and as I only use them for races, I was a bit bleak. I chatted to the DarkHorse people, who recommended getting the wheel rebuilt - they said that the stiffness of the rim and the low spoke count means that when you bash the wheel hard enough to break one spoke, the rest take quite a knock too, and are weakened. I got it rebuilt with new spokes and it has behaved perfectly since then. [84kg if anyone cares]
  8. 'cause even bombproof crossmarks need to be replaced eventually #nopuncturesin2.5years

  12. Was a bit of a toughie. Broken spoke and min training to blame. What got my goat was watching my bunch steam away from me on the Nelsons Creek climb out of Wellington, and seeing some guy hanging onto his mate's car as it dragged him up the hill past all of us stragglers. Got his number though: 1A-549
  13. Team Nexus - 8h11. I see no shame in walking up MF, but looking forward to the Plumpudding descent.
  14. Maxxis Crossmark 2.1 (L) UST. As a back tyre - has been pretty bombproof for me.
  15. Pretty Epic day out. Don't think I've seen so many people stopped for punctures even on a 'proper' MTB race. I think the main culprit was short strands of barbed wire in the road; I saw plenty and got nailed by a couple.
