  1. A mate has two MTBs he wants to sell one... Just did a race on the one he wants to sell this weekend. Specs as far as I know: 2005 Raleigh Frame (sure it's alloy/ aluminium) Has the Shimano XT Group set (not sure if there are many or one) V-brakes Continental Tires (seem in good nick) Dunno what wheels As I said - I did a race with it that past weekend and the bike seems really good... The gears did slip once or twice when changing and going over some very bumpy tarain but otherwise performed well through the water/ sand and mud in the race so it seems good. With cleats and shoes he says he'll let it go for R2000 ... I'm thinking it's a great deal Opinions? I've just bought a road bike and not willing to fork out R4/5k now so the only reason I'm considering it is because it's sounds like a great deal!
  2. Sounds really good but all the bikes I've seen with the 105 group set have been over R5k and up to 10k... if you know of any please let me know
  3. I'm new to road cycling and looking to buy a bike for +- R4k From what I've learned so far I'll need 56 (Large) frame, I see most of the bikes have a carbon fork and some or other shimano groupset. Most of the bikes in my price range have Sora groupset but I've read this is bottom of the line and shouldn't be considered if you want to do any substantial amount of riding (not sure what would be considered substantial). A mate and myself are training for the 94.7 and the Argus... Would like to build up to 150km per week. Should I get the Sora or look at spending more... What will happen with the cheaper groups set? Will it just break sooner from wear and tear? If I get the Sora can I but individual components from the better range (Tiagta/ Ultegra etc) to replace piece by piece to build it up? What sort of total weight should I look at in a bike my size? It seems under 10kg is good?
  4. I'm just starting out and what to get into mountain biking... A mate at work is selling a bike and I need to know if it's any good. Bike specs... Price R 7000.00 The specs for the MTB are as follows Make: Mongoose Model: Otero Elite Full Suspension, 24 Speed Levers: Altus Front Derailer: Altus Rear Derailer: Shimano Alivo Rims: Alex Rims Brakes: Hornet Q3 Hydraulic Brakes Front Shock: Suntour CXM Rear Shock: Epicon He sent pictures which I can add if need be... Any advice is welcome thanks.
  5. Good place to go to in joburg north? What should I expect to pay?
  6. Broke my friends carbon handle bars in some head over handlebar action... Bought a replacement bar... It's a little longer so I need to cut it... Need some advice can I just use a hack-saw? Secondly how do you get the rubber grips off the old set and onto the new set? Tried and it's friggin' hard to make it move... Once I have it off is there a lubricant I can use to help get it on the new bar? Silicone/oil/spray and cook? Thanks in advance - appreciate any advice!
  7. I've got my first triathlon this sunday - just got my bike yesterday - haven't been on a bike in 10 years or more I need to get used to the cleats and all... Would have loved to go this afternoon but it's only Mon - Thurs F**K... Where else can I go??? I'm desperate and because I'm not experienced would prefer to practice in a closed track... I've borrowed a mates Tri bike - the saddle position seams quite high - is that right? Where can I go for a setup around Midrand - wanted to get on it yesterday but it seems fall-on-your-face-high Any help and suggestions please!

  13. Thanks man... Nice advice! Registered for the triathlon... I've done two spinning classes last friday and doing another tomorrow and haven't been on a bike for well over 10 years... If nothing else, this is going to be interesting... What can I expect from the 40km cycle? Any tips?
  14. Lol yup... even the entry level stuff looks quite pricey

  17. well shite R3k is even a lot to spend on something you're not quite sure you'll still be interested in, in a month or two - although I'm sure I will... But got a mate to borrow his spare bike to me in the mean time and I can save up some more for if I get more serious about it
  18. ha ha classic ... k kewl - these r things a man must know... protect the sacred crack
  19. Thanks nice advice! I'm in JHB - Midrand side... But am prepared to travel Got a mate who has a spare bike - got no clue what it is but at least I can get a fair idea of whether I like the sport or not before puting down hard cash... He's offered to borrow gloves and helmet too - so I'm quite well sorted *air punch* While I wait to get the bike from him I'll start doing spinning classes - they have 90min advanced classes at VA so at least can start building up my strength etc
  20. Hahaahaha ROFL Speedo R200, Goggles + Spares R600, Kick board R200, Paddles R 350, Pull Buoy R150 plus other extras you can get ... Speed suits can cost up to R5000 but still miles cheaper than top of the line bike kits I see
  21. Hey all, I've been a competitive open water swimmer for 10 years now looking to expand a little and maybe do some xterra events etc... I need to get a mountain bike so point me in the right direction... 1. Mountain bike (not sure what to budget but R3k or less would b good for me) 2. Helmet 3. Gloves 4. Cycling shorts 5. Sunglasses 6. Shoes (what shoes and how and etc etc - are they all standard with cleets that fit on the pedals or what) 7. Bike rack for my car What else? I wanna get into this but it seems like it's going to cost a fortune - this coming from swimming where full kit would cost R1.5k) Advice, ideas etc How do I start training, where are good places for trail riding, should I go spinning at gym a few times a week to get my muscles used to it in the mean time? I'm a complete and clueless novice - any help will b appreciated Mike
